Historia
We think we know what an autocratic state looks like: There is an all-powerful leader at the top. He controls the police. The police threaten the people with violence. There are evil collaborators, and maybe some brave dissidents. But in the 21st century, that bears little resemblance to reality. Nowadays, autocracies are underpinned not by one dictator, but by sophisticated networks composed of kleptocratic financial structures, surveillance technologies, and professional propagandists, all of which operate across multiple regimes, from China to Russia to Iran.

The new world order
Revisado: 12-08-24
Really a joy to watch a person with deep knowledge give their take on the new world order. Very compelling, and everything passes the sniff test. In some ways it’s like a 2024 version of the Clash of Civilizations.

The best and brightest are abducted, taken to the Carryx world-palace to join prisoners from a thousand other species. Intriguing start
Revisado: 09-30-24
Let’s see where this goes. It’s a strong start with good characters and good world building. Seems to be more on the soft side of sci fi than the Expanse was, but that’s not a problem. Excited to see where they go with this.

Historia
For five brief, glorious days in the autumn of 1956, the Hungarian revolution gave its people a glimpse at a different kind of future - until, at four o’clock in the morning on a Sunday in November, the citizens of Budapest awoke to the shattering sound of Russian tanks ravaging their streets. The revolution was over. But freedom beckoned in the form of a small footbridge at Andau, on the Austrian border. By an accident of history, it became, for a few harrowing weeks, one of the most important crossings in the world, as the soul of a nation fled across its unsteady planks.

Crucial history
Revisado: 04-11-24
This book was written immediately after the events in question. In typical Michener style, he finds a way to weave together stories in a way that makes a cohesive, multi-faceted narrative that explains the revolution in a way I have not seen elsewhere. My father participated in the revolution, and although I was never able to get him to give me the full story, everything he told me about those days aligns with what is written in this book.

Historia
Americans have always loved guns. This special bond was forged during the American Revolution and sanctified by the Second Amendment. It is because of this exceptional relationship that American civilians are more heavily armed than the citizens of any other nation. Or so we're told. In The Gunning of America, historian Pamela Haag overturns this conventional wisdom. American gun culture, she argues, developed not because the gun was exceptional but precisely because it was not.

So much potential…wasted
Revisado: 07-01-23
There is good content in this book. But it has two fundamental problems.
1) The author spends nearly half the book speculating about a character that plays a very minor role in the overall history. There not a lot of substance but just a lot of “she may have” and “perhaps she thought,” etc.
2) the book seems to be written for a mass audience, but the author can’t resist writing as if this were for academia. Convoluted sentences. Unnecessary big words. Tons of extensive quoting from sources she likes.
In short, whoever edited this book failed at their task. I was excited to read a history of the gun industry, Instead I struggled through one of the most poorly written books I have read in a long time.
All that being said, it does contain some interesting insights into the history of the gun business in America. The question is: is the juice worth the squeeze?

Google, Yelp, and TripAdvisor are often the consumer’s first impression of your brand, especially in a tourist economy. Is your business dominating your competition, or have you not addressed your search engine ranking because you “show up” if you Google your own business? Good enough, right? Not even close. What works for your competitor’s brand could be worthless for yours.

Useful but not mind blowing

There is not much in here that wasn’t already covered in the first book. I won’t complain about content though since it is practical and relevant. However. For a guy who tells you again and again that you should hire pros to do things you aren’t expert at, it’s kind of disappointing that he apparently chose to record this himself, at home at his computer and in one take. Dude - this would be so much better if you hired a voice actor in a studio. I can hear your email chime sounding and a truck driving by. If you put out a third one, for the love of god, please follow your own advice and hire a pro!

Historia
David Bradford and Carole Robin taught interpersonal skills to MBA candidates for a combined 75 years in their legendary Stanford Graduate School of Business course Interpersonal Dynamics (affectionately known to generations of students as "Touchy-Feely") and have coached and consulted hundreds of executives for decades. In Connect, they show listeners how to take their relationships from shallow to exceptional by cultivating authenticity, vulnerability, and honesty, while being willing to ask for and offer help, share a commitment to growth, and deal productively with conflict.

Real life applications
Revisado: 07-25-22
Full transparency: I took Interpersonal Dynamics at Stanford, which is the course this book is based on. That means I am familiar with the material and have met both of the authors.
That said, I wanted to re-read this book to refresh my memory and key interpersonal skills, since life has moved on since I took their class. The book is also good for people who are generally trying to figure out how to build stronger relationships, or navigate difficult conversations. I think this could be a great book for couples who are working on their communication, particularly if paired with counseling.
The thrust of the book is about building exceptional relationships, meaning ones in which you feel close, are honest (even when inconvenient), and push the other person to grow, all while coming from a place of care. I don’t know of another book out there that has this focus, though some of its themes (like having difficult conversations) are also covered well in other books — though never in the context of having those discussions with people you care about.
I think they did a great job coming up with scenarios that feel both real and relevant, unlike some other books in the genre. An adult daughter trying to set new ground rules with her aging father, a close work friendship between a man and a woman, and two friends trying to be real with each other while one is thinking of cheating on her husband.
They don’t tell you how to navigate those situations, but they have insightful things to share about what their fictional characters do and say, and what effect different approaches to the same problems might have.
Overall, it’s a really worthwhile listen, and (having read the hardcover before) it improves with re-listening. Highly recommended!
