Historia
Evan Smoak is a highly trained former government assassin who has survived for years by keeping his circle to a few trusted confidants and a strict code he calls “The Ten Commandments.” But when Evan suddenly finds himself at odds with his oldest friend, all the rules he lives by shatter—and the consequences are murderous. Tommy Stojack might be Evan's best friend in the world. He’s a gifted gunsmith who has created much of Evan's own weapons and combat gear. But now, he has apparently crossed one of Evan's hardest lines and their argument explodes into open warfare.

Probably the BEST yet.
Revisado: 03-04-25
Having listened to all previous Orphan X novels, I’m thinking this is the best of the series. Well, until the next, perhaps. Gregg Hurwitz has become one of my favorite thriller writers. Scott Brick’s narration is dead-on perfect for this series.

Historia
As Sam Acquillo tells us in the early part of Back Lash, "Not everyone gets to live their adult lives orbiting a central mystery." But that's how it's been for Sam, whose entire existence has been defined by a single horrific event. Now that event has reached out from the deep past, an unwanted visitor, and Sam is forced to unpack, like a Russian doll, secrets within secrets, each more ominous than the one before.

the character of his tough-guy engineer turned detective.

Historia
Charlie Reade looks like a regular high school kid, great at baseball and football, a decent student. But he carries a heavy load. His mom was killed in a horrific accident when he was seven, and grief drove his dad to drink. Charlie learned how to take care of himself—and his dad. When Charlie is seventeen, he meets a dog named Radar and her aging master, Howard Bowditch, a recluse in a big house at the top of a big hill, with a locked shed in the backyard. Sometimes strange sounds emerge from that shed.

A Wonderful Surprise
Revisado: 01-16-23
What a WONDERFUL story! I did not expect to like - love - a fairy tale! This is so different from his other books, but it might now be my favorite Stephen King novel. Part of me even wishes there will be a sequel, though there is a very definite happy ending. I think listening to this is likely even better than reading it, thanks to its narrator.

Historia
Who do you trust? Who can you depend on? James Beltz's modern-day gunslinger, known to the rest of us as DJ Slaughter, returns in this thrilling sequel. Book one left us with a massive cliffhanger. Book two serves to answer all of your burning questions in the very first chapter. However, in a sudden, neck-snapping plot twist, you will only be left with more questions. Nice job, James. Very nice job indeed... The first book was a break-neck pace of thrilling adventure, reminding this reviewer of the first season of the Fox TV series "24".

The narrator is a bad choice.
Revisado: 12-08-19
This is my second Slaughter novel. And possibly my last. At first I was sure it was only the narrator’s fault I wasn’t enjoying Beltz’s story, but now that I’ve slogged my way through two of his novels, I’ve decided the writing makes me feel like a teenager is the author. AND...I have to agree with the other reviewers who say the guy reading them is a bad choice.

The last thing FBI agent Will Brody remembers is the explosion - a thousand shards of glass surfing a lethal shock wave. He wakes without a scratch. The building is in ruins. His team is gone. Outside, Chicago is dark. Cars lie abandoned. No planes cross the sky. He's relieved to spot other people - until he sees they're carrying machetes.

Really disappointing
Revisado: 05-18-18
Made it all the way through this pretty terrible book, which is saying something, because I liked it about halfway through. The story went off into gobbledygook at its mid-point, and the ending was totally weird. Interesting concept of the afterlife, but awful treatment of the idea.
