Historia
Jonathan Stride’s best friend, Steve Garske, makes a shocking deathbed confession: He protected Stride by covering up a murder. Hours later, the police dig up Steve’s yard and find a body with a bullet hole in its skull. Stride is pretty sure he knows who it is. Seven years ago, an out-of-town reporter disappeared while investigating anonymous allegations of rape against a prominent politician. Back then, the police believed that the reporter drowned at a dangerous swimming hole called the Deeps...but the discovery of the body changes everything.

Very Well Done. Not the best one to start with.

I found this series by accident. This is my favorite genre & after 20+ yrs with Audible, I have trouble finding new series. I started w/book 2 which I liked well enough to get another but went to book 6 because I didn’t like the synopsis of the others. One gripe I have about the genre is the main characters are similar, author to author. Big guy, special forces, personal tragedy, murder of spouse/squad etc Or alcoholic detective, divorced, burned out yet beloved by a partner. This guy isn’t a phone-it-in character. The plots of books 6 to here have all been more believable than most; and interestingly, they relate to current news events. I’m hooked.

Historia
The Chicago Tribune has dubbed Elmore Leonard, “the coolest, hottest writer in America.” In the same league as the legendary great ones—John D. MacDonald, Dashiell Hammett, James M. Cain—Leonard demonstrates his remarkable mastery with Get Shorty, one of the most adored of his forty-plus novels. The basis of the hit movie starring John Travolta and Danny DeVito, Get Shorty chronicles the over-the-top, sometimes violent Hollywood misadventures of a Florida mob loan shark who chases a deadbeat client all the way to Tinseltown and decides to stick around and make movies.

For some it’s an opportunity. For others it’s a moment to question their faith: In God, in science, in everything. Still others try to keep the world running in the face of absurdity and uncertainty. And then there are the billions looking to the sky and wondering how a thing that was always just there is now... something absolutely impossible.

I bought this years ago as new books were coming out. I got 15 min, hated it & couldn’t finish. I tried again a couple years later. Same with thing. I’m listening to the series -again. I return to the series when I don’t want to buy credits. Later books all mention Nagatha and the DeLorian and the story itself isn’t recapped anywhere. So, what the heck, it’s only 7 hours. Now I’m fast forwarding thru the worst of it.

I can’t tell if the characters are so vivid because of the writing or the narrator’s rendition. I think any other narrator could not pull it off. I won’t use a credit for less than 8 hrs of listening time. Having several books in one file solves that problem. Now, of course, I’m hooked. Happily they bound the rest of the books into sets of 3 so now, it’s really affordable. Yay.

Excellent value. Great Story Telling & Narrator
Revisado: 01-28-25
I think my title pretty much say it all. The main character has an odd sense of humor that the narrator fully captures. Some of the plots seemed a bit far fetched but they were entertaining enough that a few minutes in I wanted to finish.
After I finished the 4 book collection I decided the next in the series was worth a credit. But the last book The Numbers, is a prequel & it’s not identified as such. Very, very disappointing. If you’re new to this t character by all means start there. But don’t assume there’s anything new.

The Best
Revisado: 11-18-24
I’m only a couple hours into it & had to tell someone how great this book is. I haven’t read/listened to any Winslow novel I didn’t really enjoy but this is something else. It’s like rich music. The narrator found the perfect pace and pitch. Having said that, I had to slow it WAY down to be able to hear it. When I was able to relax into it, it became a pleasure to listen to. I think it’s better than if I were doing the reading.
