Historia
"If you go to Antigua as a tourist, this is what you will see. If you come by aeroplane, you will land at the V. C. Bird International Airport. Vere Cornwall (V. C.) Bird is the prime minister of Antigua. You may be the sort of tourist who would wonder why a prime minister would want an airport named after him - why not a school, why not a hospital, why not some great public monument. You are a tourist and you have not yet seen..." So begins Jamaica Kincaid's expansive essay, which shows us what we have not yet seen of the 10-by-12-mile island in the British West Indies.

Surprisingly Good
Revisado: 03-15-24
I had no idea what to expect. I just wanted a quick read, something to kill a little bit of time. This book was perfect. This is a history book, living history. Her style of delivery kept me invested. Must read.

Very Sad Story
Revisado: 09-16-23
I enjoyed the story but it’s really too sad to say I liked it. I hate the pain of justice not being served. Good guys don’t always win, I know, but this one doesn’t even come close.

Historia
A masterful, moving novel about age, memory, and family from one of the literary icons of our time. Ptolemy Grey is 91 years old and has been all but forgotten - by his family, his friends, even himself - as he sinks into a lonely dementia. His grand-nephew, Ptolemy's only connection to the outside world, was recently killed in a drive-by shooting, and Ptolemy is too suspicious of anyone else to allow them into his life. Until he meets Robyn, his niece's 17-year-old lodger and the only one willing to take care of an old man at his grandnephew's funeral.

So much better than the movie
Revisado: 09-12-23
I don’t know why I even bother to watch the movie when I’ve already read the book. I guess I must like torturing myself. These characters really spoke to me. I have these people in my family. Do the good guys really win in this scenario? I don’t think so. This seems like a crabs in a bucket situation, whatever progress is made by one is soon cancelled by the others. But, provides great entertainment for the reader. Walter Mosley knows exactly how to tease his readers and leave us wanting more.

I’m so glad that I listened. This story was so real. I know these women, many from my own family.
