A relentleff blockbufter of a boke. Heartily recommended!
Revisado: 11-11-24
This is the kind of book that makes people fall in love with the W40k universe. Think "vampiric Catholic Space Nazis versus alien bug swarm versus the forces of Hell itself", with some ancient Rome thrown in for good measure.
Interestingly, despite nearly all the main characters being towering genetically-engineered super-soldiers with a penchant for psychopathic berzerker rages, the narrator has a tendency to make them all sound like dignified old men. Imagine the cast of I, Claudius on steroids and wielding chainsaw axes. and yet, somehow, he makes it work.

This ALIEN story begins where most end: with a xenomorph loose on a damaged spaceship hurtling through space. Once a highly decorated marine, Chris Temple, a recently widowed single father to two young daughters, Jane, 11, and Emma, 8, is onboard. Despite his particular set of skills, Chris doesn’t get involved in the fight with the alien, instead focusing on keeping his children safe as the ship comes in for a crash landing.

Flawed to the core, like so many recent Aliens novels
Revisado: 10-26-24
What starts out as a promising story set in the Aliens universe soon slides into the same rut that so many of the other Aliens novels fall into: at numerous points the narrative action is ground to a screetching halt to give extensive backstories on characters that are obviously about to get killed; nothing about the alien is implied- every encounter is meticilously described down to the most minute, clinical detail; death scenes are prolonged to the point that they cease to be horror or even action, turning instead into tiresome comedy.
It is as if they were all written by the same lousy editor, whose number one rule was... filler.

Not every danger comes in the form of a mega-threat like a Titan. Some predators are a lot cozier...more personal. When one such creature threatens an independent tutor, Harry Dresden must shake off the blood and dirt of his most recent battles and rise to the occasion, even when it turns out that the new predator is far more dangerous and connected than first appearances would suggest.

Agood short story read by the writer
Revisado: 02-14-24
This short story in the Dresden Files universe is more curiosity than essential reading, but it is actually rather good, and it marks the first major narrative effort of the author, Jim Butcher, himself.
Technically, then, this could be considered the "true" voice of Harry Dresden. Admittedly he is no James Marsters, but once he hits his stride he's actually kind of good.

Historia
Venture, a direct rival to the Weyland-Yutani corporation, will accept any risk to crush the competition. Thus, when a corporate spy "acquires" a bizarre, leathery egg from a hijacked vessel, she takes it directly to the Venture testing facility on Jericho 3. Though unaware of the danger it poses, the scientists there recognize their prize's immeasurable value. Early tests reveal little, however, and they come to an inevitable conclusion. They need a human test subject.... Enter Zula Hendricks.

A badly written disappointment, for several reasons
Revisado: 02-11-24
The plot of this book had the potential to make a great story. Unfortunately, it is an amateurish, badly- written disappointment.
Instead of a terse, punchy thriller, Tim Waggoner Has delivered an anemic, overlong story with all of the signs of having been padded out with filler.
There are vast tracts of the story in which the action pauses mid-beat, and we are forced to endure a character's inner thoughts as they ponder things that happened in the past, how they feel about it, and what they are planning to do after they finish thinking about it.
There are many paragraphs- particularly when the alien attacks or infects someone- in which essentially the same sequence of events is told over and over again in slightly different words.
And Zula Hendricks- THE standout character of the recent Aliens comics- has been reduced from a hard-to-know, hard-to-like loner with insane, even self-destructive levels of determination, into a frankly generic action heroine- an inspiring team leader- who bears little resemblance to the deeply antisocial Zula Hendricks from the comics.
For these reasons I cannot recommend this. Aliens: The Cold Forge was everything this is not.

After a bizarre and disturbing incident at the funeral of matriarch Marian Savage, the McCray and Savage families look forward to a restful and relaxing summer at Beldame, on Alabama's Gulf Coast, where three Victorian houses loom over the shimmering beach. Two of the houses are habitable, while the third is slowly and mysteriously being buried beneath an enormous dune of blindingly white sand. But though long uninhabited, the third house is not empty. Inside, something deadly lies in wait.

Very slow at first, but it picks up with speed
Revisado: 01-01-23
It took a while for me to get to grips with this story, which didn't really feel like a horror so much as a Southern drama for the first third of its length.
However, once it's done laying the foundations things start to happen and eventually they start happening faster and faster. By that time, you've come to genuinely care about these people, and it has far more of an impact than it would have had if all of the background had been skipped.
In the end, it was ultimately a satisfying read and genuinely scary.

You have not and will never find a better version of the works of Sherlock Holmes- or of his creator, Arthur Conan Doyle. It is a masterpiece.

Rosamond Pike has delivered one of the best narrative performances I have ever heard. It is difficult to imagine anyone doing as well as the superb production done by Michael Kramer and Kate Reading, but she's pulled it off. Her work here may turn out to be the one good thing to come out of the recent miguided television production.

“I have sensed a disturbance in the Force.” Ominous words under any circumstances, but all the more so when uttered by Emperor Palpatine. On Batuu, at the edges of the Unknown Regions, a threat to the Empire is taking root - its existence little more than a glimmer, its consequences as yet unknowable. But it is troubling enough to the Imperial leader to warrant investigation by his most powerful agents: ruthless enforcer Lord Darth Vader and brilliant strategist Grand Admiral Thrawn.

Revisado: 04-15-22
This book is a superb introduction to the Warhammer 40k universe. It is an entirely self contained series of short stories and adventures which just happened to systematically introduce the reader to a surprisingly large quantity of warhammer 40K background lore.
