Historia
In a Philadelphia neighborhood rocked by the opioid crisis, two once-inseparable sisters find themselves at odds. One, Kacey, lives on the streets in the vise of addiction. The other, Mickey, walks those same blocks on her police beat. They don't speak anymore, but Mickey never stops worrying about her sibling. Then Kacey disappears, suddenly, at the same time that a mysterious string of murders begins in Mickey's district, and Mickey becomes dangerously obsessed with finding the culprit - and her sister - before it's too late.

Generational Trauma
Revisado: 04-06-25
This is an excellent book. I really enjoyed it. The narration is excellent and the story line is compelling. While the subject matter is pretty grim, the story is told with grace. For anyone who wants a realistic insight into the complexities of generational trauma, this book is an absolute page turner with plenty of unexpected twists and turns.

Historia
Jean McConville's abduction was one of the most notorious episodes of the vicious conflict known as The Troubles. Everyone in the neighborhood knew the I.R.A. was responsible. But in a climate of fear and paranoia, no one would speak of it. In 2003, five years after an accord brought an uneasy peace to Northern Ireland, a set of human bones was discovered on a beach. McConville's children knew it was their mother when they were told a blue safety pin was attached to the dress--with so many kids, she had always kept it handy for diapers or ripped clothes.

Could Not Stop Listening
Revisado: 12-30-20
When I began this book, I did not have a particular interest in learning more about the Northern Irish Troubles. However the book came highly recommended and so I began. WHAT A BOOK! First off, the story is absolutely riveting and it is told in a way that keeps you on the edge of your seat to the very last page - when you get an unbelievable surprise. Secondly, the narration is stunning. Perhaps it is that lovely Irish accent but I know listening to this book (as opposed to reading it) made it that much more enjoyable because of the narration. Finally, the book is an excellent insight into the issues behind the Troubles - and as with all conflicts, there are always two sides. I enjoyed this book so much that I bought a hard copy to have in my library. I highly recommend this book to anyone who loves a good read and who wants to learn along the way. You might think that you are not that interested in a deep dive into Northern Irish history but I guarantee you will change your mind! Simply excellent!

A Bit Fluffy
Revisado: 12-30-20
While I understand that Tess Hadley has a devoted following - I am not entirely sure why. This book does have some interesting plot turns but overall it is about a group of people whom - to me at least, were mostly unlikable to the point of being downright annoying. Liking a book is subjective on so many levels and when I read something like this - which IS well written, I feel a bit like I ate too much candy. I need to brush my teeth and have some delicious, savory, and complex cheese.

Historia
Making a living reproducing famous artworks for a popular online retailer and desperate to improve her situation, Claire is lured into a Faustian bargain with Aiden Markel, a powerful gallery owner. She agrees to forge a painting - a Degas masterpiece stolen from the Gardner Museum - in exchange for a one-woman show in his renowned gallery. But when that very same long-missing Degas painting is delivered to Claire's studio, she begins to suspect that it may itself be a forgery. Her desperate search for the truth leads Claire into a labyrinth of deceit where secrets hidden since the late 19th century may be the only evidence that can now save her life.

Annoying
Revisado: 12-30-20
Although I finished this book - I was kicking myself along the way for wasting time on it. However, the one interesting thing it did do was give me a perspective into how an artist, who is passionate about painting, looks at art. The plot is predictable to a point as are the characters. The action disturbing and the author leaves us with the impression that she believes that the main character in the story is without guilt for her part in the "Faustian bargain." I am sure there are other books out there about art forgery - and while this book does have some interesting elements, I cannot recommend it.

Historia
Two weeks of rest and recuperation - that's what the doctor ordered. Detective Sergeant DC Smith could listen to some music, make some of his own, and maybe even catch up on his reading; he is almost looking forward to it. And then there is a knock on the door. It's only his next-door neighbor, but it is the beginning of a sequence of events that will bring him face to face with some of the darkest episodes and the most dangerous people from his own past.

Thought Provoking
Revisado: 12-30-20
I enjoy this Peter Grainger series very much. All the DC Smith books are a lovely diversion. In This Bright Future takes DC Smith back to his early days when he was in the British Army - stationed in Northern Ireland during the Troubles. It is important to have read the books leading up to this story so that you know what a principled man DC is. The revelations is this story are jarring on many levels - and the book itself provides insight into the complex issues of Northern Ireland. I really love the characters in this series and love how their personalities unfold. The narration is spot on. If you love mysteries - start at the beginning of this series. It will provide hours of intelligent and sometimes humorous entertainment!

Revisado: 12-30-20
This book should be required reading for anyone trying to understand the immigration issue between the U.S. and Mexico. While the book was written awhile ago, it tells a haunting story. The language is one step away from poetry and the narration is beautiful. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in trying to understand this complex and heartbreaking issue.

Born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho, Tara Westover was seventeen the first time she set foot in a classroom. Her family was so isolated from mainstream society that there was no one to ensure the children received an education, and no one to intervene when one of Tara’s older brothers became violent. When another brother got himself into college, Tara decided to try a new kind of life. Her quest for knowledge transformed her, taking her over oceans and across continents, to Harvard and to Cambridge University.

An Excellent Read
Revisado: 01-03-20
This was a difficult book to listen to. There is a great deal of psychological and physical abuse. However, in spite of that, I found it fascinating and could not stop listening. The story is almost unbelievable - except that it is true. While it is only one side of a complex account, there is little reason to doubt the story teller. What causes such extremism? How does a person who is indoctrinated with extreme views their entire childhood manage to escape to a more balanced reality? I guess education is the key. Definitely worth a listen. Excellent narration.

I enjoyed this book very much. The narration is excellent and the description so good that it was very easy to visualize the story. The character development is well done with the main character developing into a confident detective as the story unfolds. If you like mysteries and care about the details, you will enjoy this classic English whodunit.

A Story that Makes Us know Nothing Ever Changes
Revisado: 10-15-19
This is an absolutely fascinating story - extremely disturbing but very interesting at the same time. The idea that Native Americans could be openly murdered without repercussions is depressing to say the least. The racism and greed that underscores this story is epic. Sadly, the book is very timely. Our current political situation with the greed and corruption that seems to drive it is no different from what went on in the ‘20’s in Oklahoma. Learning the origin’s of the FBI is a fascinating part of the narrative. The female narrator for the first half of the book has gotten a bad rap. She does a perfectly acceptable job laying out the story. This book tells a little-known story and does a very good job doing it.

Dee Brown's eloquent, meticulously documented account of the systematic destruction of the American Indian during the second half of the 19th century uses council records, autobiographies, and firsthand descriptions. Brown allows great chiefs and warriors of the Dakota, Ute, Sioux, Cheyenne, and other tribes to tell us in their own words of the battles, massacres, and broken treaties that finally left them demoralized and defeated.

Mandatory Reading
Revisado: 07-19-19
This book should be mandatory reading for every American. I read it when it was first released and recently decided to listen to it. It is beyond devastating. I feel that we all must make an effort to understand our history and develop greater sensitivity to the horrendous injustice suffered by Native Americans. Listen to this book.
