Nothing new to see here...

I'm afraid I've lost count of how many books I read dealing with some sort of collapse of society (EMP attack, Zombie out-break or take your pick) that feature a main character who is an ex-military hero with a heart of gold, that somehow manages to build a state of the art bunker complex which he stocks with just about anything and everything he'd ever need, just in time for the collapse. Our hero then goes on to almost singlehandedly strike blows against the evil outsiders who invade his land trying to take what is rightfully his. There is no grey, only black and white. That's this story in a nutshell. Not a bad story, but nothing that hasn't been done over and over (and over) before. Not bad enough to ask for my money back, but certainly not good enough to keep the pain going with the purchase of the next book.

As far as Science Fiction novels set in a dark but no so distant future go, this one was pretty awful. The characters were not particularly likable, the story was far fetched and unbelievable, and I kept thinking the author might have been a frustrated porn writer. Admittedly, I got less than half of the way through before I couldn't stomach any more, so MAYBE it ended strong, but I guess I'll never know. WANTED just wasn't for me.

Wow. "Bad" does not even begin to describe this book. I'm not sure what was more unbelievable, the flying school bus, or the idea that a Denver Nugget would drive a Prius. The narrator droned-on in a monotone voice, and it took all my will just to get to the rather abrupt ending. The bad guys were all bigoted, gun-toting White Christian cannibals (with bad teeth), while the good guys were a rainbow coalition of peace loving do-gooders. This was, hands down, the most politically correct science fiction story I've ever read (heard?), and it was neither believable or enjoyable. Save yourself eight hours of your life you'll never get back and spend your credit elsewhere.
