The performance saved the story

Love the ensemble cast. It was very easy to listen to. I didn’t think the story really went anywhere. For some reason knowing the actor/actress who was speaking caused a disconnect and that’s usually never a problem for me but in this book it was.
I love Jennifer Beals but the whole time I kept thinking Natasha Lyonne narrating Daisy would have been perfect.

There were parts that were upsetting to listen to but that’s life. Great short story. The sound effects in the background really put you in the moment. This would make a phenomenal play.

Falls Flat

The ending ruins any redeeming qualities that the book had. Prior to the ending, the book was just ok. There were too many characters to give proper depth to their development. The lame sci-if ending robbed the suspense and thriller element of the preceding 29 chapters.
There were so many missed opportunities with this book. I would have preferred if the “magic” at the end had been revealed towards the end of the first third of the book. Then the remainder of the book could give the reader a juxtaposed view of Hazel’s perspective with the magic and Nella’s without. The end could be Nella’s big decision on whether she chooses to drink the Kool Aid.
Then there would be real substance to warrant discussion on this book. To be fair, I am a black woman in the corporate world who usually is the only black woman or black person in the room. So for me there wasn’t anything eye opening, which is why I think it just fell flat.
My speed was set at 1.2x because I find that readers speak too slowly. The performance was ok.
