Intriguing story
Revisado: 05-04-25
Great story that was tightly written. The narrator was hideous. He never varied his voice between characters. So a kid might be talking and then the dad, but they sounded the same and it was very difficult to distinguish between the characters. Also, the narrator tended to be pretty monotonous (great if you listen to go to sleep, but awful if you’re driving!).

Great character

Loved this book and a new “action hero”, the Nowhere Man. This man’s very interesting background makes the story complicated enough to be believed. Never boring!

Another interesting Icelandic murder mystery
Revisado: 05-16-24
I find this author’s books very interesting. The Icelandic culture is enough different from American that it adds quite a bit to the story.
Narration by George Guidall is outstanding, as usual.

Historia
World War II has just ended, and Britain has established the Control Commission for Germany, which oversees their zone of occupation. The Control Commission hires British civilians to work in Germany, rebuild the shattered nation, and prosecute war crimes. Somewhat aimless, bored with her job as a provincial schoolteacher, and unwilling to live with her overbearing mother any longer, 30-something Edith Graham applies for a job with the Commission - but she is also recruited by her cousin Leo, who is in the Secret Service.

Interesting with great variety
Revisado: 04-21-24
Unlike most post WW2 books, this mixes everyday life with post war military work. Not a lot of gruesome descriptions of the holocaust, but it is definitely in the background of this story. The characters are very well developed. From Edith’s naiveté to Dory and Jack’s experience at deception, each character’s personality is built up with layers of description through the book so a real connection is present for each one. The pace can be a little slow for those who are interested in action. Overall, a great listen.

Historia
Esther Safran Foer grew up in a home where the past was too terrible to speak of. The child of parents who were each the sole survivors of their respective families, for Esther the Holocaust loomed in the backdrop of daily life, felt but never discussed. The result was a childhood marked by painful silences and continued tragedy. Even as she built a successful career, married, and raised three children, Esther always felt herself searching.

Interesting narrative
Revisado: 04-08-24
I expected more of a historical novel from this book. Instead, it is more like a recitation of a woman’s journey to understanding of her history.
For a Christian, some terms were unfamiliar and it would’ve been helpful to have a little more detail to understand things like saying Kaddish and the Jewish traditions.
I have to wonder how people and places in Ukraine that are central to this story have fared since the Russian invasion and war that started in 2022.
I appreciate the prologue and epilogue.

Historia
In the wake of an earthquake, the water level of an Icelandic lake drops suddenly, revealing the skeleton of a man half-buried in its sandy bed. It is clear immediately that it has been there for many years. There is a large hole in the skull. Yet more mysteriously, a heavy communication device is attached to it, possibly some sort of radio transmitter, bearing inscriptions in Russian. The police are called in and Erlendur, Elinborg, and Sigurdur Olii begin their investigation, which gradually leads them back to the time of the Cold War when bright, left-wing students would be sent from Iceland to study in the "heavenly state" of communist East Germany.

Espionage, murder and time
Revisado: 03-19-24
Interesting story that bounces between Cold War in E Germany and current times. Erlendur is his usual dogged detective who digs to find out about the skeleton that is found after some of a lake drains away and he ends up finding out the identity plus he gets an old Ford Falcon that is new to him, but still quite the relic, like he is.
Pace is a little slow, as most of the Erlendur stories.

A great read and teaching!
Revisado: 02-15-24
I’ve never read anything by Jodi Picoult before. She is a wonderful author. This book has great story and character development about a very difficult subject—racism in America.
Thank you Jodi, for writing this book. I learned so much and I have some concrete actions I can do to address racism.
I very highly recommend this book.

Historia
From the hero whistleblower of the infamous Theranos scam, Thicker than Water is a look at never-before-revealed details behind closed doors at the company, revealing a cautionary tale of corporate bullying, gaslighting, ego, and wealth running amok in Silicon Valley. Tyler Shultz had been in the workforce for less than a year when he emailed Elizabeth Holmes, his employer and the CEO and founder of Theranos, with concerns that the company’s lab practices were faulty, ignored quality control, and were potentially dangerous to patients.

Arrogant and privileged young man
Revisado: 02-10-24
This story, while it is true, is told with such a small minded approach that I was disgusted by the author after the book was about 1/2 ways through. He is obviously very entitled and sounds like he expects to be not only respected by everyone without necessarily deserving respect but also honored for all he does. I find his story pretty sophomoric.
