I think I'm done with Karin Slaughter
Revisado: 12-12-24
There are plenty of good qualities here - sympathetic characters, gentle lessons about making assumptions - but the combination of unrelenting earnestness and overly graphic descriptions wears me down.

Historia
He’s the Man With No Name and the owner of No Alibis, a mystery bookshop in Belfast. But when a detective agency next door goes bust, the agency’s clients start calling into his shop asking him to solve their cases. It’s not as if there’s any danger involved. It’s an easy way to sell books to his gullible customers and Alison, the beautiful girl in the jewellery shop across the road, will surely be impressed. Except she’s not – because she can see the bigger picture.

annoying
Revisado: 10-07-24
This story is good but the characters are annoying, the narration makes no difference between them, and only the last bit was enjoyable when the whole thing got wrapped up.

Shane Collins, a world-weary CIA spy, is ready to come in from the cold. Stationed in Bahrain off the coast of Saudi Arabia for his final tour, he has little use for his mission—uncovering Iranian support for the insurgency against the monarchy. Then Collins meets Almaisa, a beautiful and enigmatic artist, and his eyes are opened to a side of Bahrain most expats never experience, to questions he never thought to ask.

Can't go on
Revisado: 04-10-24
I lasted almost 5 hours, and cannot take the endless peacocking. Everyone is gazed at and judged, women are a superficial bunch and must be "handled" or used if deemed attractive, and the main character is a jaded, well, peacock! One little crumb of something possibly interesting to come was dropped, but I give up. Boring, irritating, long-winded. No thanks.

A cartoon of a production
Revisado: 03-15-24
An audio book is not a cheap overblown TV sound track production. This was a waste of plenty of production money - give the book to any one of the excellent voice actors in it and let them perform it with no annoying sound effects, hackneyed horror film tropes, or cheap drawn out suffering sounds. If I want bad TV I'll watch it.
the book itself is mediocre but the production made it ridiculous.

written to a recipe?
Revisado: 01-24-23
This book sounds like it was written by someone who has so little experience with the genre they needed a recipe for beginners. I did not get very far and can only hope it moved past the cliché festival it began with.

oof.
Revisado: 01-10-23
It was easy to dislike just about every character. This was a preposterous story but had just enough of a thin thread to keep me listening during a very boring few days. The reader was OK in dialog sometimes, but really put me off most the time. I won't be back for more of this author or narrator.

Can't take any more
Revisado: 10-23-22
Even though the story is somewhat interesting, the constant judging of every person, especially women, by their physical characteristics is enough to make me want to throw the book into the nearest trash can. At least deleting it won't add to landfill or recycling. I really do not want to go that far into that particular kind of male gaze, thanks.

Not for me
Revisado: 12-08-21
I have enjoyed many of Kate Wilhelm's books, but this one was certainly not my cup of tea. It is a melodramatic soap opera with some historical details. The performance is adequate.
