Jim Dale performs this series so much better. the Jim Dale version can be enjoyed like a favorite movie many times. The Fry version is boring.

absolutely loved this book. the wit and humor is perfect, and the story is empowering not only for women, but all people. easy listening! after you read, I highly recommend the TV series too.

I preferred the First 15 Lives of Harry August but this book was enjoyable. This is a love story vs Harry August which is a Save The World type book. Both have a main character that keeps reliving their lives.

There are no likable characters

This true story of a father taking his two children away from their mother I think must be every mother’s nightmare. However, much as I grew to dislike Raymond when I heard his views on women and his rationalizations for moving from one to another fathering and deserting children in the process, I could not like Lil, the mother lost her children. Throughout the entire story I waited for her to express sadness at the difficult childhood that her two lost children had. But she never did! She talked frequently about how young she was when she lost them, so that it afforded her another opportunity to “move on“, and how it enabled her to have a much nicer life. I sensed more relief on her part that she had the opportunity at a new life rather than devastation at the loss of her children and their lost childhoods. I ended this book still wondering about what the true reason was that Raymond took the children and did Lil who was very young at the time express a desire to be rid of her children and rid of that responsibility? I never got the sense that Lil was being fully truthful in the story. I felt that she was always making excuses so, despite the fact that she suffered a great loss, I had trouble feeling sympathy for her.

I come from an anesthesiology background. He does a good job describing anesthesia in detail to lay people. it is an easy to understand read with some interesting stories. Pretty short but still takes several hours.

Laugh out loud story

It is rare that a book makes me laugh out loud, but this one did - even at the gym while on the elliptical. This was an entertaining, yet honest, sometimes poignant, story.

What character would you cut from The Expats?

The convoluted plot of double, triple, quadruple -crossing left the reader with no one to bond with or root for. This book seemed to be an effort to create a story by simple chaining many twists together and hoping to,have a book in the end.
