Historia
Once upon a time, philosophy was a dangerous business-and for no one more so than for Baruch Spinoza, the seventeenth-century philosopher vilified by theologians and political authorities everywhere as "the atheist Jew." As his inflammatory manuscripts circulated underground, Spinoza lived a humble existence in The Hague, grinding optical lenses to make ends meet. Meanwhile, in the glittering salons of Paris, Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz was climbing the ladder of courtly success.

Enlightening and amusing at the same time
Revisado: 04-23-25
I found this super helpful in understanding Spinoza, when I've found other books abstruse and impenetrable. Of course the funny, if somewhat snarky, biographical aspect of the book helped draw me through -- and that was great

Drawing on a wealth of untapped archival materials and the reports of generations of family members - mayors, judges, scholars, diplomats, and journalists - The Hundred Years' War on Palestine upends accepted interpretations of the conflict, which tend, at best, to describe a tragic clash between two peoples with claims to the same territory. Instead, Khalidi traces a hundred years of colonial war on the Palestinians, waged first by the Zionist movement and then Israel, but backed by Britain and the United States, the great powers of the age.

A brilliant, nostrum-busting resetting of the historical record
Revisado: 12-30-23
Relentless in its detail, this shines a harshly bright light on a history that has always been complex, hard to grasp and frustratingly misrepresented. A must-read, even if tough to take and hear

Historia
To his customers and neighbors on 125th street, Ray Carney is an upstanding salesman of reasonably priced furniture, making a decent life for himself and his family. He and his wife Elizabeth are expecting their second child, and if her parents on Striver's Row don't approve of him or their cramped apartment across from the subway tracks, it's still home. Few people know he descends from a line of uptown hoods and crooks, and that his façade of normalcy has more than a few cracks in it. Cracks that are getting bigger all the time.

Enjoyable and unsettling at the same time
Revisado: 08-28-22
Fabulously nuanced reading of a well written and darkly telling tale. Buoyed along by wit and humor it gives you an unsettlingly visceral sense of the odds stacked against Black Americans.

Historia
Our narrator should be happy, shouldn't she? She's young, thin, pretty, a recent Columbia graduate; she works an easy job at a hip art gallery and lives in an apartment on the Upper East Side of Manhattan paid for, like the rest of her needs, by her inheritance. But there is a dark and vacuous hole in her heart, and it isn't just the loss of her parents, or the way her Wall Street boyfriend treats her, or her sadomasochistic relationship with her best friend, Reva. It's the year 2000 in a city aglitter with wealth and possibility; what could be so terribly wrong?

The Literary Equivalent of Beavis and Butthead
Revisado: 09-01-21
I really wanted to like this book. Sure I sniggered as I read it and that was slightly enjoyable. But it was such a snide post-modern kind of sniggering it left me feeling empty and slightly sick. It uses 9/11 to lead you on, making you wonder if the protagonist will redeem herself in the end. Of course she doesn't. And that's the self-congratulatory cleverness of it all. I kick myself for listening all the way through it.

It is the story of 11-year-old Pecola Breedlove--a black girl in an America whose love for its blond, blue-eyed children can devastate all others--who prays for her eyes to turn blue: so that she will be beautiful, so that people will look at her, so that her world will be different. This is the story of the nightmare at the heart of her yearning and the tragedy of its fulfillment.

Disturbing, powerful and beautiful
Revisado: 09-27-20
Not for the faint of heart but so empathetically and poetically written that it opens your eyes to what you might otherwise turn away from. The author's reading enhances all that even more. I loved it, even if the ending doesn't quite pull together. Given her project though, I can't see how

Sometimes the cleverness and intelligence of the writer overwhelms both the story and its meaning. Even though I laughed and oohed and ahhed at times with Susan Choi's writing she left me feeling disappointed.

Is this what the Romance genre is like?
Revisado: 10-14-17
I really wanted to enjoy this but I struggled with what seemed to me like its slushy one-dimensionality. There were one or two narrative surprises, which was good, but in any of the difficult situations in which the characters found themselves, the details always seemed skipped over. The characters didn't develop or struggle. But then I started to wonder if the author wasn't just trying to work within in a genre where people are nice, rich and generous and the context is generally humorless. I guess I need more struggles, dilemmas and also laughs. Maybe that's just me

In this award-winning Audible Studios production, Trevor Noah tells his wild coming-of-age tale during the twilight of apartheid in South Africa. It’s a story that begins with his mother throwing him from a moving van to save him from a potentially fatal dispute with gangsters, then follows the budding comedian’s path to self-discovery through episodes both poignant and comical.
