Historia
We live in a world that’s obsessed with talent. We celebrate gifted students in school, natural athletes in sports, and child prodigies in music. But admiring people who start out with innate advantages leads us to overlook the distance we ourselves can travel. We underestimate the range of skills that we can learn and how good we can become. We can all improve at improving. And when opportunity doesn’t knock, there are ways to build a door.

Blown away
Revisado: 03-14-24
I’ve only finished listening to the prologue just now and am flabbergasted. This is THE best audiobook I’ve ever listened to. The message, the data, the raw voices of the actual people involved, the use of language by the author, the tight scripting of the stories and narrative are really top notch. And if that wasn’t enough, the main message itself is empowering and the stories are inspirational.

Historia
Based on his provocative and popular New York Times op-ed, The Man They Wanted Me to Be is both memoir and cultural analysis. Jared Yates Sexton alternates between an examination of his working class upbringing and historical, psychological, and sociological sources that examine the genesis of toxic masculinity and its consequences for society. The Man They Wanted Me to Be examines how we teach boys what's expected of men in America, and the long-term effects of that socialization-which include depression, shorter lives, misogyny, and suicide.

A powerful mix of personal narrative and societal observation. It gave me new perspectives. Only critique: drags a little at certain points.
