Historia
How did Fidel Castro fool the CIA for a generation? Why did Neville Chamberlain think he could trust Adolf Hitler? Why are campus sexual assaults on the rise? Do television sitcoms teach us something about the way we relate to each other that isn't true? While tackling these questions, Malcolm Gladwell was not solely writing a book for the page. He was also producing for the ear. In the audiobook version of Talking to Strangers, you’ll hear the voices of people he interviewed - scientists, criminologists, military psychologists.

Think like Gladwell
Revisado: 09-16-19
Gladwell has a way of asking the right questions and answering them be weaving a narrative around all the subtle intricacies that the 24 hour news cycle glosses over. Like David & Goliath, Blink, and his podcast Revisionist History, Talking to Strangers takes the stories we think we know and looks at them through a different lens. By the end of the book Gladwell has left me in awe as I realize he’s right once again.

Historia
In this smart and funny book, celebrated cartoonist Zach Weinersmith and noted researcher Dr. Kelly Weinersmith give us a snapshot of what's coming next - from robot swarms to nuclear fusion powered-toasters. By weaving their own research and interviews with the scientists who are making these advances happen, the Weinersmiths investigate why these technologies are needed, how they would work, and what is standing in their way.

Interesting and funny
Revisado: 01-17-19
The authors cover a range of interesting possibilities for the future mostly dealing with space and medicine. As they explain the possibilities for and barriers to this exciting (or terrifying) future, they use creative examples, dry wit, and basically just make this the most hilarious and enjoyable science book I’ve ever read. They had me cracking up with their witty footnotes, odd pairings when listening or making priorities, and the overall delivery was a true delight. I had a lot of fun listening. Highly recommend the Weinersmiths.

Nick Offerman is a wordsmith
Revisado: 08-07-18
This book was a delight to listen to. Offerman is humorous, smart, and insightful as he takes you through a list of people who have influenced his life. The man has a vocabulary that would make a GRE practice test feel illiterate, yet he maintains a humility and respect for other people throughout the book that just reinforces my opinion of him. Mighty fine man. Mighty fine book.
I was more interested in some sections of the book than others, but that's because he chose a variety of people who influenced his life. It's only natural that I would connect with some but not all aspects of his personality.

Historia
Some people are meant to travel the globe, to unwrap its secrets, and share them with the world. And some people have no sense of direction, are terrified of pigeons, and get motion sickness from tying their shoes. These people are meant to stay home and eat nachos. Geraldine DeRuiter is the latter. But she won't let that stop her. Hilarious, irreverent, and heartfelt, All over the Place chronicles the years Geraldine spent traveling the world after getting laid off from a job she loved.

A truly enjoyable story
Revisado: 05-31-17
Geraldine's self deprecating humor woven into relatable stories capped with poignant life lessons make All Over the Place truly enjoyable listen. The way she words things cracked me up from beginning to end, and her performance in the audio is so sincere as she relives her life with you. The book feels like one long chat with a big sister (even though she's four years younger than you) who you know isn't perfect, but when she comes to a conclusion about life, you can't help but acknowledge that she's right.

Historia
Linguistics, the study of language, has a reputation for being complex and inaccessible. But here's a secret: There's a lot that's quirky and intriguing about how human language works-and much of it is downright fun to learn about. But with so many potential avenues of exploration, it can often seem daunting to try to understand it. Where does one even start?

Short gems to pique your interest in Linguistics
Revisado: 11-22-16
I'm an ESL teacher, and I felt much more interested in my language teaching courses than in my linguistics courses. Perhaps I would still feel lost if I took a full course, but McWhorter's lectures are short, free of jargon, not overly complex, and they give you a sense of various aspects of language that I hadn't considered.
The sample I listened to before buying made me think it might be interesting to me because of my background, but that I would drag it out only listening when I had nothing else. Instead I put everything else on hold and went through it in a few days. Informative and entertaining.
