Repetitive sex scenes. Moaning at every chance. Becomes interesting in the last three chapters as tension and conflict build

Excellent narration. Lots of coincidences making the story less plausible. Yet, still enjoyable and kept my interest.

A listening joy. Couldn't stop myself putting all my chores behind. Entertaining, clever, and the narration is perfect.

A compelling story with an authenticity that jumps out. The haunting story of Zapper (Billy McErlane) comes from the rough side of Newcastle-upon-Tyne, an area known as Biker. He's sees the inside of prison as a juvenile. His intelligence and creativity save him. His life's not a cakewalk. The classic underdog that never gets the fair break he deserves. Heart wrenching at times. What I find is the author's narration is perfect. I've only heard a few authors do justice to their books and this ranks among the best. The voice, the intonation, and the understated emotion make this audiobook a treasure.

“Brett Gets Hammered” is book 6 in the series and the second I’ve read; I started with the last, book 9, “Don’t Mess with Brett.” There is no need to read the books in order as the author provides enough background to either fill the gaps or allows the reader to infer Brett’s history. I enjoyed the humor in both and take Brett’s masochism intentional—using the extreme to eradicate masochism and sexism. A case of overkill reveals that equality is better than inequality. But a reader needs a sense of humor to grasp this point.

In book 6 Brett gets his comeuppance, proving another rule: there is always someone bigger, smarter, faster, and cleverer than the person who thinks they are top of the heap. And with Brett’s vulnerability I found myself at times sympathetic to him, unlike in book 9. Both books made me smile, with a few out loud chuckles—can’t ask for more than this.

For me Brett is an immersion into absurdity to escape from today’s actual absurd world. “Brett Gets Hammered” is a great audiobook companion to pass the time while in traffic or on crowded public transport or a long flight and away from the 24/7 news cycle. I enjoyed every moment in Brett’s world.

This may be book nine but my first encounter with Brett Cornell and the D’Aguanno’s mystery series. I was unprepared. I anticipated a mix of hard-boiled and pulp but not the male super stud cross of Janet Evanovich’s Stephanie Plum and Robert Parker’s Spencer. I hear in Brett (via narrator Travis Carter) the Rhode Island mongrel tones of Boston with New York.

Getting use to Brett Cornell’s brag and swag took time. It seemed like I was watching a twenty-car pile-up and I couldn’t help myself from looking. I suppose it’s the reason people go to a NASCAR Race or WWF wrestling match—the fun is in the mayhem. Forget grammar, forget the mystery formula, forget a brain. The book rollicks sleaze that is beautiful narrated by Travis Carter—why isn’t he famous or on Saturday Night Live?

I wanted to hate the unscrupulous Brett; I wanted to hate the book. But I can’t. It’s too good to not enjoy. I eat chocolate cake. I don’t want to and I know it’s bad, yet I enjoy every bite. I believe Brett Cornell the best recruiter for the PC movement and #metoo. Compared to Brett’s exploits, Casanova’s are kindergarten projects.

Inventive and unexpected ending. Backman doesn't do sentiment in a milk-it-for-all you can. He lets it drip out, slow until the end when the jaw drops. Sacrifice and unselfish act means no recognition, no final plaque or gold star. A story that will stay with me a long time. Excellent writing and perfect narration.

Lucy and Rylan get to know each other and themselves. Lucy’s motive may be academic but she learns more than she imagines—but worth the effort. I grinned from Chapters 3 to the end. A novella that’s fun with sex galore.

This is the second book in Hassell’s “Five Boroughs” series. I loved the first, “Sunset Park,” and this is just as good. “Sutphin Boulevard.” You don't need to read the first but the link to Michael and Nunzio from the first come into this in secondary roles even though important. The story derives from two blue-collar boys admitting a longtime love for each other and looks into the issues of class and ethnicity through sexuality. Best new writer of this genre in decades. Michael Ferraiuoli's narration is spot on. A must listen audiobook!

If you don't know Carofiglio, then find out. He is a terrific Italian mystery/thriller writer. His Judge Guerrieri teaches us everything we need to know and more about the Italian legal system. But that's not the point which is the storyline is gripping, has twists, and characters that will melt your gelato. Loved it as all of Carofiglio's books.
