Historia
Rosie Schaap has always loved bars: the wood and brass and jukeboxes, the knowing bartenders, and especially the sometimes surprising but always comforting company of regulars. Starting with her misspent youth in the bar car of a regional railroad, where at age 15 she told commuters’ fortunes in exchange for beer, and continuing today as she slings cocktails at a neighborhood joint in Brooklyn, Schaap has learned her way around both sides of a bar and come to realize how powerful the fellowship among bar patrons can be.

I was proven wrong again
Revisado: 04-23-25
I normally avoid books which are “performed” and additionally “read by author.” I was wrong on both with this interesting, clear and engaging book. Unclear was that the author had a drinking issue but I could relate based on past drinking to the enjoyment and human connection achieved only in such hangouts. Highly insightful and extremely well “performed” by author whose other book I immediately got.

Historia
Beginning in 2018, a powerful app for secure communications, called Anom, began to take root among drug dealers and other criminals. It had extraordinary safeguards to keep out prying eyes--the power to quickly wipe data, voice-masking technology, and more. It was better than other apps popular among organized crime syndicates, except for one thing: it was secretly run by law enforcement. Over the next few years, the FBI, along with law enforcement partners in Australia and parts of Europe, got a front row seat to the global criminal underworld.

SPECTACULAR STORY AND READER
Revisado: 06-13-24
This in my opinion is one of the truly best listening experiences. No unnecessary drama or diversion. A superb story, reader and the type of story which shines with both. Highly recommended.

Historia
Pretty, smart, and pampered, Audrey Marie Hilley grew up in a small Alabama town believing she was entitled to the best of everything. But marriage to her high school sweetheart, a cushy secretarial job, and motherhood were not enough to satisfy Marie, and she soon began to act out in troubling ways. Only when her husband, Frank, became sick with a mysterious illness, did it seem that she was ready to put someone else's needs ahead of her own. The truth was far more disturbing.

Historia
In 2016, the fate of Paramount Global’s entertainment empire hung precariously in the balance. Its founder and head, ninety-three-year-old Sumner M. Redstone, was facing a very public lawsuit brought by a former romantic companion, Manuela Herzer, which placed Sumner’s deteriorating health and questionable judgment under a harsh light.

Stewart Strikes Again
Revisado: 04-08-23
Why read current novels when real life is more interesting. Sure, gossipy but in my view deliciously so. Stewart wrote the the classic Barbarians at the Gate which was a leader in the business disclosure literature. Not as good but still, in my view perfect for the Audible format.

Historia
In July 2011, the oil tanker Brillante Virtuoso was drifting through the treacherous Gulf of Aden when a crew of pirates attacked and set her ablaze in a devastating explosion. But when David Mockett, a maritime surveyor working for Lloyd’s of London, inspected the damaged vessel, he was left with more questions than answers. How had the pirates gotten aboard so easily? And if they wanted to steal the ship and bargain for its return, then why did they destroy it? The questions didn’t add up—and Mockett would never answer them.

A great story which also informs
Revisado: 04-08-23
This is a fascinating story, one which fills in a story I knew bits about and a helpful explanation of the law of the sea and the non lawyers who do the real work.

Great Book and terrible Audio and Cast
Revisado: 12-15-22
I really really wanted a listenable version but this is not it. Terrible audio and dramatic, affected cast. So many good book on Audible but really too bad about this one. Try Winesburg, Ohio. Tom

Having gotten totally lost in the story just read about it in Wikipedia. Sounds like a good story but I found impossibly complex and am bailing out. Better luck to others. Good reader though.

Historia
Winesburg, Ohio is a little-known masterpiece that forever changed the course of American storytelling. At the center of this collection of stories stands George Willard, an earnest young reporter for the Winesburg Eagle who sets out to gather the town’s daily news. He ends up discovering the town’s deepest secrets as one by one, the townsfolk confide their hopes, dreams, and fears to the reporter. In their recollections of first loves and last rites, of sprawling farms and winding country roads, the town rises vividly - and poignantly - to life.

A classic classic
Revisado: 08-14-19
This book is a classic. It was near first of its kind but it continues to stand up. Humanity changes little. These people may dress in century old clothes, some re-emerging again now, but human foibles are unchanged. The reading, and I don't like the word"performance," is superb. It is even and emotionally unemotional. I say this as complement but this is a stand by to help me sleep. And that is truly a plus. So, overall an important book, a touch of humanity, a little bit of Alice Munro from many days back. A truly wonderful reader completes the package.
