Brilliant blend of action, romance and comedy.
Revisado: 09-20-23
This is the third book of Davia Glenn series and I believe - the best so far. I tend to ramble so in short: buy this book - you won't regret it. Or better yet: read the first two books first (I listened) - if by some weird coincidence you haven't done it yet. You have individual plot lines in each book and the author cleverly injects some background info so new readers won't be lost, but if you skipped the first two books, you'd miss out on the overarching romantic plot which encompasses the entire series. And it's just so much fun.
So to justify the review's title...
Action and Mystery
The book jumps right into the action and doesn't let up. Like in the previous parts, we've got shootouts, chases, investigative scenes, and - guess what - even Adair gets to shoot - I'll say no more. What's important - the author's not afraid of hurting the main characters (it starts in the first scene).
The pacing is excellent - here's where the audiobook wins when compared to written words: you can easily make yourself a sandwich or even do other boring stuff while still listening to the book without unnecessary interruptions.
Romance
Davia's love triangle continues. Come on, Davia, you know you want sophisticated and lovable dreamboat Adair over the emotionally deficient stud Warden 🤣 (#teamadair here). But honestly - I do get the author couldn't make Davia choose, because the romantic plot would be finished. We'd still have plenty of action, of course, but since the crime the bad guys commit this time is seriously depressing, we'd lose the counter-effect of a lighter romantic tone. So, I guess, it'll be interesting to see if and how the author resolves this plot line over the course of the series.
Comedy
Usually a problem for me, because people have different tastes and it's hard to write humor that pleases everyone. Not the case here: the humor is subtle, more understated than exaggerated, which I loved. Besides, the entire premise of the series - a highly-trained military operative trying to live in the world of the ultra-rich is funny enough. A fish out of water, that's what Davia is, although now, in the third book, she's much better at navigating this weird albeit interesting society.
The audiobook
The narrator does a great job bringing the characters to life with unique voices. It enhanced the listening experience... with only one minor quibble on a side character's voice in the first scene - it seemed too old for me.
The Cons:
Maybe one: I wish the helicopter chase scene were longer. Oh yeah, we get a helicopter chase, and guess who the pilot is.
Overall, this is an entertaining thrill ride and my favorite of the series so far. Highly recommended for fans of action, mystery and a dash of romance.

Historia
The bards are the people's voice and their sword. All over the kingdom of Deverry, the common people are demanding a change that will wrest power from the landed aristocracy: reform of the corrupt law courts. In the city of Aberwyn, the situation catches fire when the authorities allow the death of a bard from a hunger strike rather than hear the people’s protest. But things haven’t always been this way.

Finally!
Revisado: 08-18-20
I've read the previous books on Deverry and Westland several times and I loved them. It was a great disappointment for me when the author switched to other books - not because they were bad - after all I haven't read them - but because I was sad the story had finished.
Now I can enjoy it again - pity there's only one book for now.
But it "gladdens my heart" that the story continues.
On the negative side, it was rather slow, and not much dweomer yet - I hope it will change in the next book.
