Described as American Gods meets The Avengers, Paternus combines myths from around the world in a modern story of action and intrigue that is “urban fantasy on the surface, but so much more at its core!”

Great concept, campy, unoriginal story.
Revisado: 04-26-25
While I appreciate the attempt to combine basically every legend and supernatural story into one cohesive mythos, it wasn't executed very well. The entire first book felt like listening to a middle-school kid's book report listing all the stories they read over the summer. Second book improved somewhat after all that exposition, but still relied on WAY too many story tropes. The narrator constantly mis-reading words (or the author's unfamiliarity with correct phrases) was distracting as well. I wanted it to be a great series, but it just fell flat all the way through.

Cool concept, writing needs work
Revisado: 03-12-25
The smart people aren't smart, and explaining a rather simple concept ad-nauseum to your reader comes off as condescending. Trying to shoehorn a bunch of romance and female-empowerment into this kind of book didn't help either.
I see why the series was on sale, not sure it was worth the price of admission.

Kinda bland, but decent
Revisado: 03-07-25
While I love a good time travel story, this was a bit of a let-down. I wish the author had a modicum of faith in the reader, every time a halfway decent metaphor is used, it's spoiled by the author explaining it three different ways. All the 'big reveals' are plainly obvious, except to the supposedly world class scientists. Good idea, but subpar execution.

Self-indulgent, but interesting
Revisado: 03-05-25
A good premise, with a lot of potential. Unfortunately much of that is wasted on long looping musings about the nature of mind, and the self. Unannounced flashbacks within flashbacks give the whole thing a disjointed feel, which may have been intentional, but makes it difficult to follow the narrative. Narrator often struggles with transposed letters/words, so it gets a 'meh' ratings across the board.

The stories (much like the narration) run quite a range, the good ones are downright excellent, and the bad ones are as rough as you'd imagine. Plenty of good stuff to justify the purchase, enjoy!

Historia
There has always been a darkness to Ilmar, but never more so than now. The city chafes under the heavy hand of the Palleseen occupation, the choke-hold of its criminal underworld, the boot of its factory owners, the weight of its wretched poor and the burden of its ancient curse. What will be the spark that lights the conflagration? Despite the city's refugees, wanderers, murderers, madmen, fanatics and thieves, the catalyst, as always, will be the Anchorwood–that dark grove of trees, that primeval remnant, that portal, when the moon is full, to strange and distant shores.

Historia
The Tantalus 13 survey expedition went off the rails as soon as Mary Ketch and the crew of the Diamelen learned that the thing beneath their feet wasn’t a planet. An impossibly vast and ancient artificial structure lies below, hidden from the universe under a façade of cratered stone. SCARAB arrived on Tantalus 13 two years ago. An artificially intelligent, self-constructing factory, it was supposed to aid the crew in their mission, to meet their every need.

Reads like a Y/A novel, no subtlety at all
Revisado: 01-25-25
It's clear from the start that the author has no faith in the reader's intelligence. A bit of exposition will be followed by hammering the same point home 3 or 4 more times, increasingly bluntly.
The characters are written as though they also are dense. One will give another a piece of critical information, all of whom basically say "what? couldn't be" then promptly forget they were ever told. No context clues gleaned, no attempt at working out import, just in one ear, out the other.
Many times throughout this story I simply couldn't suspend my disbelief enough to swallow the biggest corporation ever, sending a ragtag group of unqualified, emotionally damaged, misfits on a mission they're aware has major significance.
The premise had a LOT of potential, great narrator, just very poorly written. I hope this is one of the author's early attempts, so that there's hope for growth as a writer.

A masterwork: blending philosophy, horror, sci-fi, and so much more. I don't know how someone can be so talented writing in so many areas, and making it seamless. One of those stories I'll be revisiting for many years to come.

Lynesse is the lowly Fourth Daughter of the queen, and always getting in the way. But a demon is terrorizing the land, and now she's an adult (albeit barely) with responsibilities (she tells herself). Although she still gets in the way, she understands that the only way to save her people is to invoke the pact between her family and the Elder sorcerer who has inhabited the local tower for as long as her people have lived here (though none in living memory has approached it).
