Historia
Texas Ranger Darren Mathews isn’t sure he’s been a good cop, but believes he’s got a shot at being a good man—if he manages to dodge the potential indictment hanging over his head and if he, from here on out, pledges allegiance to the truth. It’s a virtue the country appears to have wholly lost its grip on, but one Darren sees as his salvation. He is in the midst of remaking his life with the woman he loves when he is visited by his mother armed with a tall tale about a missing Black college student, Sera (whose white sorority sisters insist she isn’t missing at all).

Fascinating plot, background details
Revisado: 12-22-24
I really enjoyed just about all elements of the book — unusual but very credible plot, interesting setting in a party of the country I know little about, realistic characters. However, the narrator’s voice struck me as artificial and annoying, especially the tendency to end sentences on a rising note, like a question.

Historia
The most famous man in South Carolina lives jailed in the state capital. He stands accused of a staggering amount of wrongdoing—ninety-nine crimes and counting. Once a high-flying, smooth-talking, pedigreed Southern lawyer, Alex Murdaugh is now disbarred and disgraced. For more than a decade, prosecutors claim, Alex was secretly a fraud, a thief, a drug dealer and an all-around phony. On the night of June 7, 2021, they claim, he also became a killer.

A tale of multigenerational privilege and corruption culminating in exposure
Revisado: 05-28-24
This account tracks in detail the accomplishments and predations of the men of the Murdaugh family, who for 100 years held sway in the Low Country of South Carolina as powerful and accomplished prosecutors and plaintiffs’ attorneys. Sometimes the details can become a bit overwhelming, leading to temporary confusion about the exact timeline. Also, the family’s prediction for certain names and nicknames, particularly Randolph and Buster, occasionally left this listener puzzled as to who was being discussed.
However, the excellent performance and the dramatic way in which the themes are clarified balance out these flaws.
This is a book for afficianados of the crimes of Alec Murdaugh who want to know more about the legacy that produced a man of such confident corruption and power, a true example of truth eclipsing fiction.

Historia
What happens when an old spook loses his mind? Does the Service have a retirement home for aging spies who can no longer remember their secrets are secret? Or are senile spies taken care of in a different, more permanent fashion? These are the paranoid concerns of David Cartwright, a Cold War–era operative and one-time head of MI5 who is sliding into dementia, and questions his grandson, River, must answer now that the spy who raised him sometimes forgets to wear pants. But River, himself an agent at Slough House, MI5’s outpost for disgraced spies, has other things to worry about.

Quick-moving and unpretentious espionage caper type novel; a fun listen
Revisado: 01-23-24
The Slough House series is sort of a mixed bag — some books are better than others — and this is one of the better ones. It still requires a suspension of critical examination of some plot points but for the most part seems plausible in the context of the post Cold War spy world. I like the gimmick of having everything happen in more or less one day.

Historia
London’s Slough House is where the washed-up MI5 spies go to while away what’s left of their careers. The “Slow Horses,” as they’re called, have all disgraced themselves in some way to get relegated here. Maybe they messed up an op badly, or got in the way of an ambitious colleague. Maybe they just got too dependent on the bottle—not unusual in this line of work. One thing these failed spies have in common, though, is they all want to be back in the action. Now the Slow Horses have a chance at redemption.

This series does not disappoint!
Revisado: 01-15-24
I am reading/listening to the Slow Horses series in order. I didn’t find this second one as compelling as the first in the series, mostly because the bad guys’ plan just was not credible IMO. Still, the characters, action, and writing style are outstanding, as is the reader. I highly recommended it.

The cast of characters was small but interesting. I kept hoping that there would be more to the plot than I expected but it was still a good listen and I plan to try another book in the series.

Historia
Inspired by her research for the hit podcast Ultra, Rachel Maddow charts the rise of a wild American strain of authoritarianism that has been alive on the far-right edge of our politics for the better part of a century. Before and even after our troops had begun fighting abroad in World War II, a clandestine network flooded the country with disinformation aimed at sapping the strength of the U.S. war effort and persuading Americans that our natural alliance was with the Axis, not against it.

The roots of American fascism go deep, and this account reveals stunningly that the fascists haven’t been defeated yet. The through line from American Nazi collaboration runs through current times, with updated tactics and partners.

Historia
Seventeen years after the fall of the Third Reich, Max Weill has never forgotten the atrocities he saw as a prisoner at Auschwitz - nor the face of Dr. Otto Schramm, a camp doctor who worked with Mengele on appalling experiments and who sent Max’s family to the gas chambers. As the war came to a close, Schramm was one of the many high-ranking former-Nazi officers who managed to escape Germany for new lives in South America, where leaders like Argentina’s Juan Perón gave them safe harbor and new identities.

Unique setting, good plot, excellent narrator
Revisado: 04-18-23
I generally like Joseph Kanon’s books, so I did not hesitate to use a credit for this one. As in his other books, he presents a rather convoluted (and in this instance, to me, somewhat over-complicated) plot in a unique setting — 1963 Buenos Aires, with fugitive bad guys of the worst sort, and a sympathetic and right-minded protagonist l. The narrator is non-intrusive, with a well -modulated and -paced voice.

Not much to it
Revisado: 05-31-22
There’s nothing particularly outstanding about this book. The plot really does not live up to the intriguing promise of the title description. The characters are moderately interesting and the author did a good job of presenting the women in a way that inspired my empathy.
The narrator has a sort of sing-song voice that became tiresome after a while, and her voicing of the male and child characters was just weird. As an ebook or traditional book, this is a title I would have skimmed through in about 30 minutes. Disappointing.
