Not for me
Revisado: 12-08-18
This is not a fair review, and it is not a criticism of the author's style - just the subject matter. Despite Beukes' ability and the effort put into the presentation by the narrators, I just couldn't get into this novel. It was way too dark for me. The main character made me want to gag. Maybe if I'd stuck with it, the main character would have changed to the young girl in the story, and I wouldn't have had to spend as much time on him, but I read for pleasure, and this was not a pleasant experience.

More philosophical insight than story
Revisado: 12-04-18
The novel has a well-deserved reputation as a sci-fi classic, however I felt the storyline suffered a bit by being over-long and, at times, somewhat complicated and confusing perhaps because of the author’s attempt to cover all the philosophical issues that she wished to include. Still definitely worth the read. I will be rereading it.

Amusing 3 hours
Revisado: 11-28-18
Look at the list of narrators. This is a bunch of funny guys & gals getting together (like in a bar or coffee shop), just talking. The subject is comedy, but not in any organized way. They are just having a natural, definitely unscripted dialogue. It's fun.

Nothing much new
Revisado: 09-13-18
There weren’t a lot of startling revelations here if you have been following the news on CNN and MSNBC for the past couple of years. But, it is well-organized and, if you have confidence in Bob Woodward as a reliable source, it makes a strong argument that our president is unfit to serve. I thought the book was well worth the credit and sent it on to my son.

This adventure in science and imagination, which the Medical Tribune said might herald "a Copernican revolution for the life sciences", leads the listener through unexplored jungles and uncharted aspects of mind to the heart of knowledge. In a first-person narrative of scientific discovery that opens new perspectives on biology, anthropology, and the limits of rationalism, The Cosmic Serpent reveals how startlingly different the world around us appears when we open our minds to it.

What was I thinking?
Revisado: 03-01-18
I don’t know why I purchased this book. One reviewer, to whom I should have paid more attention, said, “if you like Deepak Chopra, you will like this.” However, Chopra makes a lot more sense. In the last chapter, the author explains that his “hypothesis was not even receivable by official science”. I wish I had that information before I decided to get this book.

Not for old geezers
Revisado: 12-22-17
This is a good “young adult” novel. The dialogue is good, but the characters are one-dimensional. I think the plot would appeal to teens. At 72, I am just too old for it.

“She should have known sooner.”
Revisado: 12-12-17
I love a good cozy mystery as much as the next little old lady, but this was amateurish. The clues were obvious. The characters lacked depth and the cat was just too cutesy. However, Alison Larkin is an accomplished narrator and deserves the 5 stars.

Arriving in Cairo for another thrilling excavation season, Amelia is relaxing in a well-earned bubble bath in her elegant hotel suite in Cairo when a man with a knife protruding from his back staggers into the bath chamber and utters a single word - "murder" - before collapsing on the tiled floor, dead. Among the few possessions he carried was a sheet of paper with Amelia's name and room number.

Couldn't detect the difference
Revisado: 08-08-17
After Elizabeth Peters death, Joan Hess completed The Painted Queen. I am a long-time fan of the Amanda Peabody novels and I would never have guessed this one was not written entirely by Peters. Ms Hess has done a remarkable job of capturing Peters voice and style.
Having said that, the only reason I gave the novel four stars instead of five is just because it was so much like the other stories. I guess I'm just ready for something different.

Doctor Thorne is the third audiobook in Anthony Trollope's series known as the Chronicles of Barsetshire. Long regarded as one of Trollope's greatest works, it is a complex story of love, greed and illegitimacy. Set in fictional Barsetshire, it concerns the romantic challenges facing Doctor Thorne's penniless niece, Mary, and Frank Gresham, the only son of the impoverished squire of Greshambury. Mary falls in love with Frank but he is constrained by the need to marry well to restore the family fortunes.

Doctor Thorne is delightful melodrama
Revisado: 10-20-16
While this novel is clearly writing for an earlier era and may safely be categorized as "chic lit," it will be enjoyed by those who also find the novels of Jane Austin a treat. What the plot lacks is thrills and surprises the quality of the writing more than makes up for.
Mr. West is the perfect narrator for this piece. He is Doctor Thorne.
