Historia
Jem begins to track down the people who were there the night Toby died – a close circle of friends once known as the ‘Seven Wonders’ for their charm and talent – only to find them as tormented and broken as himself. All of them knew and loved Toby at Oxford. Could one of them really be his killer? As Jem grows closer to uncovering what happened that night, his pursuer grows bolder, making increasingly terrifying attempts to silence him for good. Will exposing Toby's killer put to rest the shadows that have darkened Jem’s life for so long? Or will the gruesome truth only put him in more danger?

worth reading
Revisado: 04-16-24
I wasn't sure I liked the narration at first, but in the end he was great. I thought I knew who the killer was and was getting bored it was taking so long, but then I was wrong (twice) and the story twisted again. It tied together well. Everything fit. Whenever I'm a little skeptical in KJ Charles' books, she ends up being right in the end. Have faith.
One poor review mentioned intimate scenes being "lacking." They are "fade to black" scenes, not detailed and not like her other romance novels but she was clear - this is a murder mystery, not a romance novel. Still, they added to the story. I can appreciate subtlety. I liked Jem leaving his stocking on in chapter 9, and taking it off in chaper 14.

Vampires slaughtered my family. No one believed me until I met some new friends, who promised to help me get justice. But nothing prepared me for Marcus Varik. Tall, dark, and mind-numbingly sexy. But he’s also shy, protective, and adorably eccentric. Oh God, I should have never agreed to betray him. Hopefully, it's not too late to fix my mistake before I lose more people I love.

what was that?
Revisado: 09-01-23
I maybe could have liked the story concept - love a good vampire story - but the writing was so bad and the performance was the worse ever. Granted, he had some ridiculous lines to get through, but he double down on all the OTT bits just making it worse. I was in my car laughing my head off it was so bad. Entertaining, but not in the way that was intended.

Toby never meant to be a highway robber, but needs must. He didn’t plan to impersonate a top London valet either, but when the chance comes to present himself as the earl of Arvon’s new gentleman's gentleman, he grabs it. Unfortunately, the earl is the man he seduced and robbed on the road to get here. Oops.

good, not great
Revisado: 10-15-22
I think most of the 5 star reviews are super-fans who can't give KJ Charles a mediocre review. And I get that, I'm a huge fan myself, but this isn't her best. It's entertaining, but not one I'll listen to again and again on road trips - that's still reserved for the Magpie Lord. I would probably have liked it better with different narration , it was too stilted, but I think some of that was her writing too.
Worth a read, but I did come away a little disappointed.

Here is how my association with Feximal came about. I dare say it may not be quite what you expect.

this is one of my favorite authors and this story does not disappoint. the format is so original in a genre and is more often formulaic. the performance was great - the voices and the pacing was perfect

A complete crime fiction box set! Homicide detective Thomas Prescott may be retired—but a serial killer, a high-profile murder, an ill-fated cruise, and a chilling small-town crime add more than enough excitement to his hard-earned rest. This collection includes the first four books: Unforeseen, Gray Matter, The Afrikaans, and Show Me.

Revisado: 10-05-21
I only made it 20 minutes before deleting. Like every other bad review, it was primarily his treatment of women. "Gargoyles"?? And then he spends his flight flirting with a flight attendant? let the poor woman do her job, which is not bolstering your ego. I can't read a book when I know I would HATE the main character in real life. the snappy too-cool-for-you voice of the narration fit the character, I guess, but just added to my dislike.

started good, getting worse
Revisado: 08-19-21
I have 2 major issues with this book, and a ton of smaller issues I won't bother with. First, Angel is supposed to be a bad ass sorcerer, but keeps turning into a damsel in distress. just how often does a grown man need to be carried around by his boyfriend? it would be bad enough if he was a woman (terrible, actually), but since he's also written as a strong and competent man it is just really really weird. That combined with the often really odd way Angel speaks to his "boys" makes me pretty sure this book is written by a 90 year old woman who has never met a gay man.
Second, the narrator always sounds like he's on the edge of an emotional breakdown. It makes the all the aforementioned damsel stuff a million times worse. I like the world building, I like the story overall, but I'm needed to consciously ignore the parts that get on my nerves to make it through.

Revisado: 05-03-21
you have to suspend some disbelief, but overall a good book.
I was a little disappointed in the narration. as it happened, I listened to 2 books but the same narrator back to back and he was much better in the other. here, he kept slipping in and out of character often giving both MC the same high lilting voice. bad to slip, and as both were described as big-ish men, the voice actually didn't fit either. not the end of the world, but I do think he didn't give his best

Historia
Priddy's a lost soul in a part of Cornwall the tourists don't get to see. He's young, sweet-natured, and gorgeous, but that's not enough to achieve escape velocity from his deadbeat village and rotten family life. He's a drifter and a dreamer, and self-preservation isn't his strong suit. An accidental overdose of a nightclub drug leaves him fractured, hallucinating, with too many vital circuits fried to function in a tough world. When a friend offers him winter work in a lighthouse, he gratefully accepts.

loved it!
Revisado: 11-23-20
Great narration, great story, fun concept.
I always read the bad reviews before I write a good one so I can offer a counter point. This time I'm stumped. I don't even know what to say. I'm always down for a nice graphic sex scene, but it's nuts to leave a bad review because an author doesn't stretch it out to 20 pages. And the story didn't ever drag for me. no accounting for taste I guess.

I liked it right up until the end
Revisado: 11-21-20
Normally an unclear ending would turn me off a story and guarantee a bad review, but the writing was good enough and the narration was great so it still warrants a 4/5. it just needed one more chapter to explain what went down 20 years ago. the boyfriend, the blackmail, what they were doing and how Rain's co was involved. too rushed, after being pretty slow up to that point.
the first part was great. heartbreaking, but it felt realistic. the relationship was imperfect, but still loving. stereotypical and doesn't put age gap relationships in a great light, but it fits in this scenario with the student/prof power imbalance.

love it
Revisado: 10-14-20
I liked the whole series, but this was probably my favorite. I loved the way a nonbinary character was presented. I loved the relationship between Penn and Greta. Justin is always a favorite and I'm glad he had a few parts.
Amazing and horrible that a reader had to label a review Ick and criticize Penn for being unrelatable and whiny. As information becomes more widely available, as people's (true) stories are shared, it's unforgivable to give a poor review for a work of fiction because one of the characters presents or acts differently than you. The open prejudice against trans and non-binary people is disgusting... and disappointing. Presumably someone who is reading this series isn't homophobic, but somehow feels its ok it have such a narrow view about gender and sensuality. I could go on and on. I edited to make this shorter. Getting off my soap box. I believe strongly that more books that push readers out of their comfort zone are needed, and I'm always happy to read one.
