Historia
Hillbilly Elegy is a passionate and personal analysis of a culture in crisis - that of white working-class Americans. The decline of this group, a demographic of our country that has been slowly disintegrating over 40 years, has been reported on with growing frequency and alarm but has never before been written about as searingly from the inside. J. D. Vance tells the true story of what a social, regional, and class decline feels like when you were born with it hung around your neck.

Good story, preachy ending
Revisado: 09-23-24
The rags to riches story is very good, engaging and heart warming. The last few chapters preaching about what should be done to save others from poverty is a poor way to end it. He should have let the message of the story stand on its own.

Historia
The car fire didn’t kill Navajo Tribal Policeman Delbert Nez—a bullet did. And the old man in possession of the murder weapon is a whiskey-soaked shaman named Ashie Pinto. Officer Jim Chee is devastated by the slaying of his good friend Del and confounded by the prime suspect’s refusal to utter a single word of confession or denial. Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn believes there is much more to this outrage than what appears on the surface as he and Jim Chee set out to unravel a complex weave of greed and death that involves a historical find and a lost fortune.

She got better
Revisado: 10-11-22
Not the best Agatha Christie novel. This is an early work before she hit her peak. The narrator was very good. Some reviewers have said her American accent is bad, but I've heard worse. As an American, it wasn't offensive. The material Agatha gave the Americans in the story to say, however, ... Yikes! It was mass cliches and misused early 20th Century slang, no doubt gotten out of early American movies, over cooked and served with frosting. Some say the adversary was obvious. I disagree. Sure, it could only have been 1 of at most 3 of the people ... unless she pulled a spectacular cheat and introduced someone last minute (she has in other books so a definite consideration - especially given the title) but the end result, while not shocking, was not who I guessed. At least she played fair and the clues were there even if there were equally as many clues, if not more, for another. Worth hearing.

Early Agatha Christie
Revisado: 10-08-22
Well written with engaging, although unbelievable, characters. The plot is not up to later Christie standards. It's a whodunit without any means for the reader to follow clues, but it makes an enjoyable light read. The performances are excellent and using two narrators was a great choice.

Historia
What begins as a typical day for Officer Bernadette Manuelito - serving a bench warrant, dealing with a herd of cattle obstructing traffic, and stumbling across a crime scene - takes an unexpected twist when she’s called to help find an old friend. Years ago, Bernie and Maya were roommates, but time and Maya’s struggles with addiction drove them apart. Now Maya’s brother asks Bernie to find out what happened to his sister. Tracing Maya’s whereabouts, Bernie learns that her old friend had confessed to the murder of her estranged husband, a prominent astronomer.

disappointed
Revisado: 04-25-21
I followed Anne's growth as an author since taking over her father's series. The writing and storing telling improved up to Cave of Bones. The Tale Teller was off quite a bit. This is just awful. There's no suspense and no excitement. The perpetrator is given away and the other characters cleared just by how they are presented. The middle is boring rehash after rehash of the evidence, and the resolution was quick, unsurprising, and bland. The change of reader was a mistake, as well. This guy is hard to listen to, reads like a High School student - emphasizing words that shouldn't be and vice versa. He uses the same voice for several characters and changed voices for some characters. Very disappointing overall.

So informative! Very timely
Revisado: 10-27-20
I'm not sure I like that Cruz is the hero of each story, but if you can set that aside, there is a lot of very interesting, important, and timely information about the US Supreme Court. Pabon doesn't sound at all like Cruz and there are places I think he missed Cruz's emphasis (and there's a "safety" editing mistake), but he did a fantastic job of keeping what could have been dry recitation of facts engaging.

A master work of intrigue but a slow burn
Revisado: 01-16-20
it's not a dollar coaster spy novel, but more like watching a personal chess match by two renown masters. The spy-craft is not satisfying, but the verisimilitude holds up well.

Historia
Mattie Ross, a 14-year-old girl from Dardanelle, Arkansas, sets out to avenge her Daddy who was shot to death by a no-good outlaw. Mattie convinces one-eyed "Rooster" Cogburn, the meanest U.S. marshal in the land, to ride along with her. In True Grit, we have a true American classic, as young Mattie, as vital as she is innocent, outdickers and outmaneuvers the hard-bitten men of the trail in a legend that will last through the ages.

Great adventure, mediocre narator
Revisado: 12-10-19
An editor could have helped this narrator by removing breathing, swallows, and awkward pauses that are distracting. The narrator isn't bad, but in places doesn't perform the characters consistently or emphasizes the wrong part of sentences. The stilted style of the book, and the author's "voice," as a character of 1st person POV, lend versimilitude but detract from the flow. The story is good. It's a slow but humerous start that ever builds toward a wild action ride, that pays off well. The characters are thick and juicy.
