Really good but also shockingly ignorant in places
Revisado: 11-08-23
I enjoyed this and learned a lot from it. However, while the author might be extremely knowledgeable about the Bible, his ignorance of the American slave trade is shocking. He said more than once that "if Southerners had followed the Bible, slavery wouldn't have been an issue." This ignores the facts that other African tribes were capturing and selling Africans into slavery, Northerners also owned slaves, and the majority of the ships that brought slaves to the US were Northern owned. There's plenty of blame to go around regarding slavery, not just to the South and not just to America. Still a good book though when the author sticks to topics he's actually knowledgeable about.

Historia
The daughter of a Legion war hero, fighting was in Andien Broxin's blood. But the battles Republic marines face on strange and alien worlds are a far cry from the vaunted, brutal, no-holds-barred conflicts fought at the edge of the galaxy by the elite legionnaires. Until a devastating war erupts right in the Republic’s stellar backyard. Newly stationed on a mid-core planet being harassed by terrorist revolutionaries, Andien and her fellow “hullbusters” find themselves right in the middle of a desperate fight for survival.

Loved this story so hard. As a female who served, the authenticity hit hard. I absolutely loved Deanie and the story itself, and Gunny was perfect. I just ordered book one of the Galaxy's Edge series. Thanks to Audible's monthly free reads and the authors for introducing me to what looks to be a great series

Historia
Dave Rubin launched his political talk show The Rubin Report in 2015 as a meeting ground for free thinkers who realize that partisan politics is a dead end. He hosts people he both agrees and disagrees with - including those who have been dismissed, deplatformed, and despised - taking on the most controversial issues of our day. As a result, he’s become a voice of reason in a time of madness. Now, Rubin gives you the tools you need to think for yourself in an age when tribal outrage is the only available alternative.

Historia
For eons, conquering dungeons has been the most efficient way to become a strong adventurer. Although not everything is as straightforward as it seems. Several questions have always plagued the minds of those who enter these mythical places of power: why are there so many monsters? Where do the amazing weaponry and heavy gold coins come from? Why does the very air fill with life-giving energies? Cal has all of the answers to these age-old questions, for a very simple reason. He is a Dungeon Heart.

This could have been great with some editing
Revisado: 05-29-20
I'm frankly surprised to see so many "great editing" mentions. This book is in DIRE need of a good edit / proofread. I have lost count of the number of times I've come across this sort of writing error:
"...Hans slowly peeked into the room. Stepping into the room fully, a bucket of ice-cold water became visible."
That means the bucket of ice-cold water stepped into the room. I've lost count of how many times that sort of thing crops up and how many times I've had to back up and re-listen to a bit to try to figure out who's doing what. It's to the point now that every time it happens, I grind my teeth. That does not make for an enjoyable reading / listening experience.
It's a shame too. The story was pretty engaging, and I love Cal. The narrator does a phenomenal job. But if I'm hearing so many errors in the audiobook, I shudder to think of what's on the printed page. Based on the story, I'd love to get next in series, but frankly I'm struggling to get through this book. I'm yanked out of the story every few minutes by an error that should have been caught in editing, and I just don't think I can make it through another book in the series no matter how much I'm curious to know what happens next.

What’s in a name? A lot. The name Tinaca, for example, has been passed down in the Jones family for generations of women. In fact, the Joneses name a Tinaca every other generation, to let the name breathe a little. To let each Tinaca shine. And shine is exactly what Tinaca Jones intends to do.

Historia
The DFZ, the metropolis formerly known as Detroit, is the world’s most magical city with a population of nine million and zero public safety laws. That’s a lot of mages, cybernetically enhanced chrome heads, and mythical beasties who die, get into debt, and otherwise fail to pay their rent. When they can’t pay their bills, their stuff gets sold to the highest bidder. That’s when they call me. I’m a Cleaner: a freelance mage employed by the DFZ to sort through the mountains of magical junk people leave behind. It’s not a pretty job, or a safe one....

The plaintiffs’ lawyer is Nick Machiavelli, who has already lost to Mary once and is now back with a vengeance —determined not to not only win, but destroy the firm. It soon becomes clear that Machiavelli will do anything in his power to achieve his end…even after the case turns deadly. The stakes have never been higher for Mary and her associates as they try to keep Machiavelli at bay, solve a murder, and save the law firm they love…or they could lose everything they’ve worked for.

Good story, but the narrator ruined it
Revisado: 05-04-19
I enjoyed this story quite a bit, but the narrator was horrible. Truly. I feel bad for saying that, but she read Judy like she would a man's voice. The way she read Benny made me wonder for half the book if Benny was supposed to be a lesbian. Not that I think lesbians sound like men--I know they don't. But I could see someone ignorant thinking they do and reading a lesbian character that way. Half the time I wondered if I'd accidentally sped up the narration (I hadn't). The other half the time, the characters sounded like Fred Flintstone. And finally and most egregiously, it was like the narrator had no idea how to read a comma. Something like this: "What do you mean," she said, surprised would come out like this: "What do you mean?" She said, "Surprised." Very disconcerting, and it kind of killed the book for me (and not in a good way). I read / listened to this for my book club, and I'm praying we don't select any more books narrated by Ms. Burton.
