Historia
When Austrian President Franz Jonas visited the Vatican in 1971, Pope Paul VI named Austria “the Island of the Blessed”. He did so to emphasize Austria’s steep recovery. Only 25 years had passed since the end of the Second World War, and Austria was already one of the most prosperous European countries. One might argue that Austria was always a rich country, and during the times of its Habsburg rulers, it certainly was. But after the dissolution of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, Austria was lost between two worlds - its German heritage and its multiethnic nation.

Not Very Captivating
Revisado: 07-09-24
I listened to the first chapter of this and returned it. It's not horrible, but it felt rushed and not really interacting with the history in a substantial way. It seems like a script for a YouTube “documentary” (in fact much of the same lines can be found in the captivating history YouTube video on Austria). Though I was looking for something succinct, I'd still rather find something by a professional historian and author. The narrator was not enjoyable.

Uhtred flees Wessex, going north to search for his stepsister in the formidable stronghold of Dunholm.

Great story, unfortunate change of narrator
Revisado: 08-14-23
The first two books in the series were read by Jonathan Keeble. In short, the change of readers was a mistake and a huge downgrade. The story is still good.

Historia
As the War of Independence begins in earnest, American merchant seamen prepare to strike the first blows. None strikes more deftly than Isaac Biddlecomb, captain of the Judea, whose smuggling activities are making a mockery of His Majesty’s Royal Navy. Pursued by HMS Rose, he sacrifices the ship he loved to the depths, together with the fortune he stood to gain, rather than surrender.

Good story, mediocre reading
Revisado: 06-22-23
The story is good, though a bit predictable. The narrator is too stiff in his delivery.

Narrator sounds like text to speech robot
Revisado: 10-02-18
The story is great, as are all in this series. It is a shame that they didn’t get Jonathan Keeble to read all of them. The narrator for this one, John Lee, is robotic and does not bring characters to life in way Keeble does.

Historia
Alfred of Wessex has survived the Danish invasions, but though he now has an uneasy truce with his enemies, fresh Viking ships are arriving to plunder and enslave the Saxons. Those Vikings must be defeated, and Alfred's first move is to deny them their fortress on the Thames, the decayed Roman city of London. His weapon is Uhtred, a warrior of formidable reputation. But neither Alfred's wisdom, not Uhtred's prowess, might be enough to save Wessex when a Viking lord captures a prize of inestimable value.

Jonathan Keeble brings it to life
Revisado: 10-02-18
It’s a shame all of the books in series aren’t read by Keeble. The stories are good, but Keeble becomes the character as he reads.
