Historia
If it’s navel-gazing you’re after, you’ve come to the wrong place; ditto treacly self-examination. Rather, his observations turn outward: a fight between two men on a bus, a fight between two men on the street, pedestrians being whacked over the head or gathering to watch as a man considers leaping to his death. There’s a dirty joke shared at a book signing, then a dirtier one told at a dinner party - lots of jokes here. Plenty of laughs.

Love this kind of ironic humor. Found myself laughing out loud many times. Both the narrators were outstanding.

Historia
In Argus, North Dakota, a collection of people revolve around a fraught wedding. Gary Geist, a terrified young man set to inherit two farms, is desperate to marry Kismet Poe, an impulsive, lapsed Goth who can't read her future but seems to resolve his. Hugo, a gentle red-haired, home-schooled giant, is also in love with Kismet. He’s determined to steal her and is eager to be a home wrecker. Kismet's mother, Crystal, hauls sugar beets for Gary's family, and on her nightly runs, tunes into the darkness of late-night radio, sees visions of guardian angels.

Unforgettable characters
Revisado: 12-10-24
The writing is outstanding. This author is a master of character development. You are totally invested in their outcome. She has written one of the most moving descriptions of a boy’s body being taken down the river I have ever read. The narrator was amazing. She had several personalities to portray and she delivered. Great story.

Historia
In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.

I loved the characters. I was so invested in their outcomes. Monkey pants and Dodo’s relationship broke my heart. The author tied up the story nicely. Wonderful journey through troubled times in our country which still seem to resound today.

At the same time, Dallas Cates, whom Joe helped lock up years ago, is released from prison with a special list tattooed on his skin. Memories
Revisado: 02-17-24
I was a contemporary of the Viet Nam war. I remember coming home from high school and hearing daily reports of the fighting. I was against the war as many young people were. It was the backdrop of our life. My family was Air Force and my sister in law was a Viet Nam nurse in the back country of Cambodia. She was instrumental in setting up med vac units. She retired as a Lt. Colonel and was one of many honored at the women’s memorial. She never talked about the war. This book depicts that pain so well. To this day, I still see vets with those haunted eyes. The author has given us a glimpse of that time. Great story. Good writing as always. Be prepared. You may find some tears here.

Interesting read
Revisado: 10-19-23
The story is classic and dated. What was a dark telling in the seventies no longer has the impact in our violence numbed society of today. It is still a good novel within the context of its time. A fable of darkness and greed as old as time.

Are they in hiding after detecting surveillance? Or have they turned and become double agents? It’s Jenkins’s duty to find out, but he’s been added to a Russian kill list. It will require all of Jenkins’s knowledge of spycraft—and an array of disguises—to return to the country undetected.
