Clever and smart

I loved this version of the Cinderella story. It was so original, and different enough from the typical Cinderella story that it was totally unpredictable. I did love the occasional hat tip to the classic. The author gave brilliant descriptions that really drew me in. Can’t wait for the second book!

I loved the route he took, his excellent way of telling the story of the people he met, and the narration in general. I’ve lived in Brazil, and am about to return to live a few more years, and this book has me even more excited.

A lyrical and authentic book that recounts the story of a border-town family in Brownsville, Texas in the 1980s, as each member of the family desperately tries to assimilate and escape life on the border to become "real" Americans, even at the expense of their shared family history. This is really un-mined territory in the memoir genre that gives in-depth insight into a previously unexplored corner of America.

Lots and lots of f-bombs, but a fascinating story.

I heard a few stories from the book on NPR and decided to try it out. The story was super interesting, but the profanity was so terrible that I thought my ears would bleed. I had to skip over whole sections because of it.
