Historia
Bengtsson's hero, Red Orm-canny - courageous and above all lucky - is only a boy when he is abducted from his Danish home by the Vikings and made to take his place at the oars of their dragon-prowed ships. Orm is then captured by the Moors in Spain, where he fights for the Caliph of Cordova. Escaping from captivity, Orm washes up in Ireland, where he marvels at those epicene creatures, the Christian monks, and from which he then moves on to play an ever more important part in the intrigues of the various Scandinavian kings and clans and dependencies.

This is an awesome story and told well!
Revisado: 08-08-20
1) This is just good storytelling on the part of the author. I'm impressed with how well he did carrying you along and moving you forward all the while using a more episodic structure. I like the eposidic rhythm because it adds to the "classic" feeling, in that it's like listening to a series of stories that build into one big story. This seems better because you can't fault the author for jumping over chunks of time or leaving some parts hanging— this is just the episodes he presents you with. In your mind you can easily imagine other episodes left untold from the hero's life.
2) Narrator did such a great job! I haven't read the book yet, but I can't imagine it would be more pleasurable than listening to it being told aloud. The narrator did a good job with the different style of voices to account for ages and accents you'd expect from the characters. It really helps it come alive and pull you in. I think the oral mode also fits really well with the story's general motif and the way it was written (see #1 above).

Exceptional series
Revisado: 05-12-20
This is an exceptional series and a wonderfully told tale from start to finish. The interludes in this book stand out as a change in the story telling technique compared to the others in the series. They are helpful to fill in important history for the plot development—I only wish the author had availed the technique in the previous books as well, for consistency of form throughout the story's telling as a whole. The open-ended epilogue is both frustrating for its loose end (because you know... you want everything wrapped up nice and tidy) and yet it is satisfyingly hopeful. I highly recommend this book and the whole series!

Wow!
Revisado: 04-24-20
Just listen! Amazing saga, amazing story telling, amazing characters. The author's narration was perfect, a true delight that brought the story even more to life—something I didn't imagine was possible. I'm both excited and sad to progress to the fourth book: excited because I don't want the saga to end, sad because I know it soon will.

Historia
At the end of The Last Kingdom, The Danes had been defeated at Cynuit, but the triumph of the English is not fated to last long. The Danish Vikings quickly invade and occupy three of England's four kingdoms - and all that remains of the once proud country is a small piece of marshland, where Alfred and his family live with a few soldiers and retainers, including Uhtred, the dispossessed English nobleman who was raised by Danes.

Helpful, informative, and affirming
Revisado: 08-21-19
First listen through was helpful, informative, and affirming. The structure helps move through content clearly, and the many many case studies and concrete examples help flesh out the concepts. I can definitely see the value of engaging some of the more technical aspects of the content in text format instead of audio. I plan to listen through again alongside the text, especially to revisit each step in light of the whole now that I've engaged them each through the audiobook. I appreciate the author acknowledging that the steps should be seen as interconnected and interwoven, not merely sequential or a strict linear process, but encourages the audience to revisit the steps holistically.
