Historia
Four hundred years ago the Alkomian Empire clawed its way from the long dark, uniting the splintered factions of mankind under one banner. Harnessing the mysterious power of runes, the empire of man spread across the land, exploring and inhabiting the ancient fortresses that they plundered for runestones. For centuries humanity has stood unopposed, masters of their own destiny. Until now. In the east a darkness stirs. An evil beyond myth and memory sends its agents to plant the seeds of mankind's destruction.

Very good book
Revisado: 11-30-18
I got this book mainly because I really like listening to Steven Brand. I see some reviews where he is criticized and at times it is not quite clear who is talking but despite that, I think he is a great narrator. I had low expectations for the book but within 2 or 3 chapters I was hooked. The story moves along quickly and I always couldn't wait to get back to back to the book to see what was going to happen next.

Historia
The Wizard's Council of Tarador was supposed to tell young Koren Bladewell that he is a wizard. They were supposed to tell everyone that he is not a jinx, that all the bad things that happen around him are because he can't control the power inside him, power he doesn't know about. The people of his village, even his parents, are afraid of him, afraid he is cursed. That he is a dangerous, evil jinx.

Hard to believe the same person created Joe Bishop
Revisado: 07-25-18
I am writing this review for the trilogy. No spoilers. I have to say that I am shocked that the same author who created Expeditionary Force, which I thought were very good and well written, created this really bad trilogy. I don't usually write reviews, especially negative ones, but I feel compelled to warn people not to buy this particular trilogy. The story is entirely predictable, uninteresting and has no point to it. It's as if the author decided he wanted to write a book about wizards and then just made an outline and and wrote several chapters combining silly fairy tale concepts with characters who he calls wizards. Nothing interesting happens in the entire series. The characters are constantly expecting to meet their deaths or some other bad outcome and, lo and behold, everything works out great. Save your money/credits. Hopefully this horrible writing does not affect the next Expeditionary Force book.

Any additional comments?
I got this book because of all the rave reviews and the very high rating (4.7/5) average from tens of thousands of listeners. I had very high expectations but found the book to be rather bland. Nothing really exciting happened. It was not overly suspenseful and nothing of great interest happens throughout the book. It certainly does not match up in any way to Patrick Rothfuss's books, Brandon Sanderson's books or Anthony Ryan's first 2 books of his Blood Song trilogy.

This book is well written and quite enjoyable until the end. Spoiler alert - At the end, it brings in a magical quasi-religious scene as the point of the entire expedition. It was completely out of the blue and had nothing to do with anything else in the book. It made the whole story pointless. It seems as though it was written by some overly religious writer who felt he had to include some reference (albeit oblique) to his religion (obviously Christianity) to satisfy some impulsive urge. I was very disappointed as I thought I had found a good series, but now I do not plan to continue. Oh well, the search goes on for other great books like the Name of the Wind (Rothfuss) or the Way of Kings (Sanderson).

The first book in the series was silly but at least enjoyable. This book was laughably simplistic. I wouldn't even say it belongs in the children's section as I think a 3rd grader would find it it silly.

Any additional comments?
I have been an Audible listener for many years and have listened to well over 100 books. This is one one of the few books I did not listen to all the way through. I stopped listening after about 15 hours. I found the story line to be so implausible as to be ridiculous. And while I certainly understand that this is a fantasy novel, I have listened to many in the same genre which I thought were markedly more enjoyable and the story lines more believable in the context of a fantasy novel as the characters were much better developed. This book had silly exchanges more in keeping with a Monty Python skit than with a serious book. Examples of much better books are Anthony Ryan's Blood Song and Tower Lord but unfortunately, the last book of the trilogy is a bit of a let down. I personally loved the narrator, but many who wrote reviews did not. Brandon Sanderson's Way of King's and Words of Radiance were excellent but be warned, they are long and don't end. Each just ends and is then just basically "to be continued" and it is supposed to be a 10 part series and we are still awaiting part 3 as of 12/2015. It also has somewhat of a religious/preechy quality to it. Best of all of them, in my opinion, is Patrick Rothfuss's The Name Of The Wind and A Wise Man's Fear. Book 3 of the trilogy is done but yet to be released.

Sublime
What does Steven Crossley bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?
I can't imagine this book being read any better
Any additional comments?
I have listened to hundreds of audio books. This is my favorite of all and the only novel I've ever listened twice. Capturing the various thoughts of a person's everyday thoughts, feelings and ideas so well and yet so subtlety was very impressive and is what makes this book a masterpiece, in my opinion. My favorite audio book and possibly my favorite of any book I have ever read.
