Good listen until the ending
Revisado: 06-29-24
I liked the story overall. Typical romantic suspense story but i hate it when the characters do dumb things at the end. In what world would you not wait for the actual cops to confront a killer? I guess author’s do this dramatic effect. It’s just unrealistic and makes the characters seem dumb.

Historia
Death is not an unfamiliar visitor to Shady Oaks Retirement Village, which provides San Diego with premier elderly support from independent retiree housing to full-time hospice care. But when a resident’s body is found brutally stabbed and his apartment ransacked, it’s clear there’s someone deadly in their community. Detective Katherine “Kit” McKittrick quickly discovers that Shady Oaks is full of skeleton-riddled closets, and most tenants prefer to keep their doors firmly closed to the SDPD.

Trying to like this story
Revisado: 05-02-24
I’ve read all of Karen Rose’s books (some multiple times). Kit and Sam’s story is by far my least favorite. I like the fast paced, more intense relationships in her other books. This feels like a school yard romance. The characters spend little to no time together which makes for a lackluster love story. The procedural part is as good as other stories but what usually makes these stories standout are that both the romance and the police procedural are both well done. Kit is annoying and acts like a child. It’s unattractive. It’s hard to get past these overly altruistic characters when there’s no chemistry between them. If there’s a 3rd book, I hope it resembles her other work more closely.

Not good
Revisado: 10-11-23
The main female character was an idiot in too many ways to count. This was not a good read. The narrator sounds like the person who voices Brain, from Pinky and the Brain. There was clearly no research into organized crime. It was a bad detective story and an absurd romantic plot. I do not recommend. Well maybe if you’re looking for a nonsensical story.

Historia
If my childhood taught me anything, it was to survive. Now I have a deep-rooted mistrust of people and a wall of steel and ice surrounding my heart. So, when Reed Ryan steps into my life, I know I need to keep him far away. He’s everything I grew up hating. Fighting. Fleeing. Devastatingly handsome, he looks like a drunken regret and has heartbreak written over every inch of his body - literally. He’s the quintessential bad boy...and he’s a cop. But the man is my undoing.

All over the place
Revisado: 09-14-23
This had potential that was completely lost in annoying characters and miscommunication. This should not have been labeled as romantic suspense. There was nothing suspenseful about unless you count characters that make rash and terrible decisions. It was way too long for situations to be resolved. The whole time spent with the male character’s family in Florida was quite ridiculous. Perhaps I made it to the end to understand the point of this very weird story.

Historia
In all his years in the Chicago Fire Department, Lieutenant Reed Solliday has never experienced anything like this recent outbreak of house fires - devastating, vicious, and in one case, homicidal. He has another problem - his new partner, Detective Mia Mitchell. She's brash, bossy, and taking the case in a direction he never imagined. Mia's instincts tell her the arsonist is making this personal. And as the infernos become more deadly, one look at the victims' tortured faces convinces her and Reed that they must work closer to catch the killer. With each new blaze, the villain ups the ante, setting firetraps for the people Reed and Mia love.

One of my favorite stories!
Revisado: 05-17-23
I love the character development (both protagonists and antagonists). Karen Rose takes the time to help the reader understand each character’s perspective. I love that I get to revisit characters from other stories as well. The romance and suspense are nicely intertwined. This is a go to when I’m between books.

Historia
Sam Reeves is a kindhearted psychologist who treats court-ordered clients. After one of his patients—a pathological liar—starts revealing plausible new details from a long-unsolved serial murder case, he’s compelled to report anonymously to the SDPD tip line, though his attempts to respect patient confidentiality land him facedown and cuffed by the aggressive (and cute) Detective McKittrick.

My least favorite Karen Rose book
Revisado: 03-14-23
This is my least favorite Karen Rose book (and I’ve read them all). I’ve never experienced such lack luster romance between the characters. I’ve also listened to this narrator before and she usually does a wayyyyy better job with the male protagonist. She uses the voice she usually uses for her teenager characters (she’s narrated other Rose books). It made for an unattractive protagonist. I’m very disappointed in this one.

Really liked this book
Revisado: 09-19-21
Although there were some plot lines that I could see coming, I loved how it came together. I wanted to keep listening to hear more. I love the heroine. She is fierce and the definition of a survivor. This book is not for the squeamish. It is well written and enthralling. I’m looking forward to reading more by this author.
