Historia
Amos Decker's life changed forever - twice. The first time was on the gridiron. A big, towering athlete, he was the only person from his hometown of Burlington ever to go pro. But his career ended before it had a chance to begin. On his very first play, a violent helmet-to-helmet collision knocked him off the field for good and left him with an improbable side effect - he can never forget anything.

Historia
Kansas City attorney Josephina Jillian Jones, 3J to her friends, has dealt with people perpetrating online disinformation, white supremacists, and clients hiding assets, so when a couple who heads up a company that builds inner city housing for marginalized communities comes to her for legal help because their longtime banking partner has shut off their funding, the case appears at first blush to be tame by comparison. But when the bank president disappears and his greed-driven brother seems the likely culprit, things heat up.

Historia
Do you feel exhausted by tribalism? You aren't alone. As culture warriors divide the world into us and them—fracturing families, friendships, and churches—most of us long for an end to the constant fighting. But does a practical path exist? Jesus lived in a culture split by tribalism, but he resisted its allure by choosing something bigger: truth. He's now inviting you to apply his ancient path to the modern culture war. How would your community change if you became a catalyst for Christlike unity? Rejecting tribalism is the first step.

Title should be Jesus over Tribe... sadly for me
Revisado: 08-21-24
I loved the title of this book because I’m quite frustrated by the chasm in our country. I thought it might help me better understand our political divide and more constructively help me and others engage with more curiosity and less conflict. I like political conversations – they are stimulating for me... but I don’t like the combative tone which so quickly arises.
This book is really thought provoking – and right when I start to lean in, the authors get religious, awkwardly (in my view) promoting Jesus (“The Lamb”) into what could really be a conversation about civility and commonality. Hey, the authors are ministers so I guess it's their thing, but really shrinks the relatability - too bad.

Historia
Most people, including many policy makers, activists, scientists, and philosophers, have encouraged us to be more empathetic - to feel the pain and pleasure of others. Yale researcher and author Paul Bloom argues that this is a mistake. Far from leading us to improve the lives of others, empathy is a capricious and irrational emotion that appeals to our narrow prejudices. It muddles our judgment and often leads to cruelty. We are at our best when we are smart enough not to rely on it and draw upon a more distanced compassion.

Boring for this layperson
Revisado: 06-07-23
As the author pointed out in the introduction, perhaps Chapter 1 covers most of the gist of the book. I didn't find Chapter 1 particularly compelling, though I do appreciate the premise. Beyond that, I'm not into lots of psych studies and stopped listening. Probably better for those who are.

How did Fidel Castro fool the CIA for a generation? Why did Neville Chamberlain think he could trust Adolf Hitler? Why are campus sexual assaults on the rise? Do television sitcoms teach us something about the way we relate to each other that isn't true? While tackling these questions, Malcolm Gladwell was not solely writing a book for the page. He was also producing for the ear. In the audiobook version of Talking to Strangers, you’ll hear the voices of people he interviewed - scientists, criminologists, military psychologists.

Roller coaster of interest, and not
Revisado: 03-07-23
Fascinating at many points. At others Gladwell goes down rabbit hole digressions that seemed pointless to me, like what seemed to be an unnecessary dwelling on suicide. Like so many books these days, could have made its important points in half the volume. Malcom Gladwell is a great reader of his works!

Just getting started, and this line is a GEM
Revisado: 01-09-23
I'm a fan of Mark Schaefer's so I am eager to read any of his books. I appreciate that Mark reads his books himself because he has a thoughtful and rhythmic delivery which is both engaging, and gives me time to digest his points as I hear them. Just getting into this one and had to share an amazing line: "It appears that many of our online friendships are little more than empty social calories." Mark is building the case for belonging via community.

Nicely set up story that ran flat

Was really enjoying the book and it seemed that rather than have a great ending that I was hoping for, it just sort of ran out of steam.
