Historia
On July 22, 2009, a special meeting was held with 24 leading scientists at the National Institutes of Health to discuss early findings that a newly discovered retrovirus was linked to chronic fatigue syndrome (CFS), prostate cancer, lymphoma, and eventually neurodevelopmental disorders in children. When Dr. Judy Mikovits finished her presentation the room was silent for a moment, then one of the scientists said, "Oh my God!" The resulting investigation would be like no other in science.

A fine example of a conspiracy theory
Revisado: 04-05-23
this book is an example of how to create the air of credibility to a piece of nonsense - since the genre is popular science, is ok to make the author this book's hero, and then assignment it by never saying "I" but rather use the 3rd person voice, mixing facts, opinions and feelings, all in the same tone. It also does not shy away from naming villains in order to make the narrative more compelling.
The use of professional jargon and name dropping is quite astounding, probably to confuse people outside of the field who do not have the tools to refute the claims (or know about the cherry picking of facts, that I assume happened).
it is not often that a book causes me to search for external confirmation, but this one did. it has just a tad too much of the martyr trope to seem trustworthy. when I did so, I was thankful for COVID that helped mark clearly the conspiracy theorists such as the authors

“Mine” is one of the first words babies learn, and by the time we grow up, the idea of ownership seems natural, whether we are buying a cup of coffee or a house. But who controls the space behind your airplane seat: you, reclining, or the squished laptop user behind you? Why is plagiarism wrong, but it’s okay to knock off a recipe or a dress design? And after a snowstorm, why does a chair in the street hold your parking space in Chicago, while in New York you lose both the space and the chair?

a small but interesting observation, a bit pompous
Revisado: 01-21-23
the book is doing a nice job of describing ownership and different ways on which it is part of an ongoing power struggle, it is to American-centric, and a bit shallow - now that we understand the rather ready to explain models of claiming ownership, what are we to do with it? it also jumps blindly between what I'll call "original ownership" to an owner selling some aspect of the resource and testing them both the same way

Trampled by Unicorns: Big Tech's Empathy Problem and How to Fix It explores how technology has progressed humanity's most noble pursuits, while also grappling with the origins of the industry's destructive empathy deficit and the practical measures Big Tech can take to self-regulate and make it right again. Author Maëlle Gavet examines the tendency for many of Big Tech's stars to stray from their user-first ideals and make products that actually profoundly damage their customers and ultimately society.

it's probably the sheer size of the problem that makes it like so, but while this book is claiming to be a call for action, there very little the regular people can do. the book is descriptive of the problem and sheds some light on the incentives that skew the industry the way it is, but it doesn't help picture an alternative to the current reality or how to get there without miracles.
it's important to read, mostly in hopes it would help pressure legislators and policy makers to do what's right.

Historia
Teams today are more complex than ever before. With new team leader responsibilities like diversity training, virtual working, mental health awareness, individualism, and more, modern team leadership is in dire need of a new code. Author George Karseras, executive team development coach and founder of TeamUp, has coined such a code that he calls the "TeamUp Playbook." The code is a four-step sequence that any team leader can follow to produce high performing teams. TeamUp Playbook is a proven formula for how to be a great team leader today.

the book tries to present a step-by-step to team building. it's nice and sounds convincing, but either it skips the "how" part, or ot is intended to audience with deep knowledge of this skills and processes. step titles make a good narrative, but as is, it lacks substance.
on the promise of being a guide to the frustrated manager, it fails entirely

Historia
Illustrating data feminism in action, D'Ignazio and Klein show how challenges to the male/female binary can help challenge other hierarchical (and empirically wrong) classification systems. They explain how, for example, an understanding of emotion can expand our ideas about effective data visualization, and how the concept of invisible labor can expose the significant human efforts required by our automated systems. And they show why the data never, ever "speak for themselves."

a long pamphlet, zero value
Revisado: 07-28-22
it starts with a "check your privileges" list, and goes downhill from there. it's a book-sized manifesto with a lot of emotion and pathos, very little in terms of actionable information, or even a way to convince anyone who is not already bought in on the idea. it promotes a very strong group think mindset under the guise of pluralism.
"feminism" in this book seems to be defined as "everything that's good and inclusive", increasing the scope of this already out of focus book to even larger mess.

In The End Is Always Near, Dan Carlin looks at questions and historical events that force us to consider what sounds like fantasy; that we might suffer the same fate that all previous eras did. Will our world ever become a ruin for future archaeologists to dig up and explore? The questions themselves are both philosophical and like something out of The Twilight Zone.

Historia
In this major statement, the renowned international-relations scholar John Mearsheimer argues that liberal hegemony, the foreign policy pursued by the United States since the Cold War ended, is doomed to fail. It makes far more sense, he maintains, for Washington to adopt a more restrained foreign policy based on a sound understanding of how nationalism and realism constrain great powers abroad.

large claims, zero evidence
Revisado: 03-10-22
like "calling bullshit" teaches, grand claims require strong evidence, which the book doesn't even try to provide. the observations might be correct, but might be a nice fiction as well. the main sin is extrapolating from the case of a single, liberal democratic unopposed superpower to the claim that it must always be so.

Historia
Popular blogger Cal Newport reveals the new key to achieving success and true meaning in professional life: the ability to master distraction. Many modern knowledge workers now spend most of their brain power battling distraction and interruption, whether because of the incessant pinging of devices, noisy open-plan offices or the difficulty of deciding what deserves their attention the most. When Cal Newport coined the term deep work on his popular blog, Study Hacks, in 2012, he found the concept quickly hit a nerve.

In The Dorito Effect, Mark Schatzker shows us how our approach to the nation's number-one public health crisis has gotten it wrong. The epidemics of obesity, heart disease, and diabetes are not tied to the overabundance of fat or carbs. Instead we have been led astray by the growing divide between flavor - the tastes we crave - and the underlying nutrition.
