Historia
In 1972, when workers in Pottstown, Pennsylvania, were digging the foundations for a new development, the last thing they expected to find was a skeleton at the bottom of a well. Who the skeleton was and how it got there were two of the long-held secrets kept by the residents of Chicken Hill, the dilapidated neighborhood where immigrant Jews and African Americans lived side by side and shared ambitions and sorrows. Chicken Hill was where Moshe and Chona Ludlow lived when Moshe integrated his theater and where Chona ran the Heaven & Earth Grocery Store.

Dark and tragic with tiny bits of hope
Revisado: 01-09-24
Well written, compelling, even, but very dark. Child sexual abuse depicted, which could be a trigger.

Emotional story of friendship in war
Revisado: 11-06-23
Inspiring fictional story of three of "The Angels of Bataan", nurses working in US military hospitals in the Philippines who became POWs when the Japanese invaded during WWII. Despite the differing authors, it flows seamlessly. Emotional and authentic.

Memorable
Revisado: 04-09-23
It's a memorable story, with an unusual plot of a supremely arrogant nobleman brought low by a stroke and subsequent aphasia. When in the medical ignorance of the day, he is branded a lunatic and imprisoned in an asylum, only a lone Quaker nurse can get through to him. It's extremely well written, but the sensual scenes get a bit tedious, and it takes a very long time for the Duke to morph into a vaguely likeable character. Still, a remarkable story, on the whole.

Historia
The compelling new Second World War novel from the author of Always in My Heart. In defending herself against her brutal husband, eighteen-year-old Ruby Clark is forced to flee London. She has no idea where Cliffehaven is, or what she will find there, but she knows that she will never be able to return home again. At first it seems she’s fallen on her feet. She gets a job at the local armaments factory, and the couple she is billeted with are kind and supportive.

Another fine entry in the a great series.
Revisado: 08-25-22
The "Beach View Boardinghouse/Cliffhaven Chronicles" series is one of my favorites. It's a WWII British homefront saga that follows a family running a seaside rooming house, as well as their friends and relatives. Although not London set, it has an "EastEnders" vibe to it, especially since this episode features Ruby, a Londoner who has fled to Cliffhaven to escape an abusive marriage.
Julie Maisie's excellent narration just enhances the story. Well done.

Great Historical Mystery Series Opener
Revisado: 06-24-21
I picked this book up on a whim, and it proved to be an excellent surprise. It has it all. An exotic setting, authentic period atmosphere, an intricate mystery, and well drawn characters that I look forward to meeting again in the next book.
The narrator did a fine job with the many characters and accents, giving each a distinct voice.
