Historia
Carolyn Mackler's Printz Honor book - starring the unforgettably funny, body-conscious Virginia Shreves - returns in this 15th anniversary edition featuring text updates and never-before-heard material from the author. Fifteen-year-old Virginia feels like a plus-sized black sheep in her family, especially next to her perfect big brother Byron. Not to mention her best friend has moved, leaving Virginia to navigate an awkward relationship with a boy alone. In order to survive, Virginia decides to follow a "Fat Girl Code of Conduct", which works, until the unthinkable causes her family's facade to crumble.

it was a fine YA story
Revisado: 05-27-23
the author was on NPR and discussing the book several years ago. I finally got around to getting the book after seeing a note scribbled on a pad while cleaning out my junk. at first the story is pretty good but then it just takes a turn for the better which obviously isn't how life actually goes. I suppose it's mildly inspirational for a teenager struggling with body image. as a 45 year old woman it lost me in the last half. the narration was fine. all of the adults sounded the same. it's, it's a fine book

the prologue is the best part
Revisado: 12-22-21
I really wanted to enjoy this book but it was really hard to even finish. the very first part which wasn't written by the author laid out what to expect from the book but the book never lived up to it.

Historia
For those who could read between the lines, the censored news out of China was terrifying. But the president insisted there was nothing to worry about. Fortunately, we are still a nation of skeptics. Fortunately, there are those among us who study pandemics and are willing to look unflinchingly at worst-case scenarios. Michael Lewis’ taut and brilliant nonfiction thriller pits a band of medical visionaries against the wall of ignorance that was the official response of the Trump administration to the outbreak of COVID-19.

Historia
Every day, in dance studios all across America, legions of little children line up at the barre to take ballet class. This time in the studio shapes their lives, instilling lessons about gender, power, bodies, and their place in the world both in and outside of dance. In Turning Pointe, journalist Chloe Angyal captures the intense love for ballet that so many dancers feel, while also grappling with its devastating shortcomings....

I knew ballet was messed up...
Revisado: 09-02-21
I've been dancing ballet for 32 years and I knew that ballet was a messed up system but I was not aware it was this messed up. I don't have the hips or the feet and now after reading this book I'm okay with that. I've been striving to get back on pointe, and now that is gone. I will never dance in pointe shoes again. I knew it was sexist and racist but again not at the level that was discussed in this book. at the end of the book it asks if the author would be willing to let their children dance ballet. My answer is a resounding "No." Not until ballet gets its sh!t together. A wonderful read and I will read it again.

Todd Hewitt is the only boy in a town of men. Ever since the settlers were infected with the Noise germ, Todd can hear everything the men think, and they hear everything he thinks. Todd is just a month away from becoming a man, but in the midst of the cacophony, he knows that the town is hiding something from him - something so awful Todd is forced to flee with only his dog, whose simple, loyal voice he hears too. With hostile men from the town in pursuit, the two stumble upon a strange and eerily silent creature: a girl. Who is she?

How is this 3 books long?
Revisado: 05-03-21
the concept presented at the beginning of the book was great. the entire time I was listening I kept wondering how the writer was able to make this story so long. this book could easily have been three to four hours. I don't understand how this was published or how it's getting the high reviews it's getting. there is no way I will torture myself with two more books.

Historia
Father of cyberpunk William Gibson’s original script for Alien III, written in 1987 as a sequel to Aliens, never made it to our screens, although it went on to achieve cult status among fans as the third instalment that might have been after being leaked online. This terrifying, cinematic multicast dramatisation - directed by the multi-award-winning Dirk Maggs - is the chance to experience William Gibson’s untold story and its terrifying, claustrophobic and dark encounters between humans and aliens, as a completely immersive audio experience.

Historia
More than 3,000 years have passed since the first events recorded in Dune. Only one link survives with those tumultuous times: the grotesque figure of Leto Atreides, son of the prophet Paul Muad'Dib, and now the virtually immortal God Emperor of Dune. He alone understands the future, and he knows with a terrible certainty that the evolution of his race is at an end unless he can breed new qualities into his species.

I thought this was great!
Revisado: 04-08-20
I didn't find this to be that much different, in how the story was presented, from the first book. I listened to both at 1.25 speed. This made it easier for me to stay engaged. I really enjoyed the new characters and just bought Children of Dune. Just a great story overall.
