Historia
In physicist Stephen Hawking's brilliant opus, A Brief History of Time, he presented us with a bold new look at our universe, how it began, and how our old views of physics and tired theories about the creation of the universe were no longer relevant. In other words, Hawking gave us a new look at our world, our universe, and ourselves. Now, Hawking presents an even more comprehensive look at our universe, its creation, and how we see ourselves within it.

Great book, slow narration

This is a fantastic journey through the world of quantum physics and cosmology, even if some of it is hard to grasp. However, the reader speaks v e r y, v e r y s l o w l y. Listening at 1.5x improved it considerably.

Not one of the best but an early inkling of what was to come. Not as grim as later novels.

In his phenomenal bestseller A Brief History of Time, Stephen Hawking literally transformed the way we think about physics, the universe, reality itself. In these thirteen essays and one remarkable extended interview, the man widely regarded as the most brilliant theoretical physicist since Einstein returns to reveal an amazing array of possibilities for understanding our universe.

Brilliant book.
Revisado: 02-20-23
I had this book on tape in the late 90s and was delighted to find the same version was available. Strangely the audio quality on the sample sounds like an old 90s cassette but Ty’s actual downloaded version was perfect!
Hawking gives great explanations and his descriptions are witty. For example…
Einstein: “God does not play dice!”
Hawking: “It appears, in fact, that God is an inveterate gambler who sometimes throws the dice where they cannot be seen.”

Historia
The most celebrated general in history, Napoleon Bonaparte (1769-1821) has for centuries attracted eminent male writers. Since Thomas Carlyle first christened him “our last Great Man”, regiments of biographers have marched across the same territory, weighing campaigns and conflicts, military tactics and power politics. With Napoleon, Ruth Scurr, one of our most eloquent and original historians, emphatically rejects the shibboleth of the “Great Man” theory of history, instead following the dramatic trajectory of Napoleon’s life through gardens, parks, and forests.

Interesting book, weak reading
Revisado: 10-22-21
This is an interesting take on the life of Napoleon, in the context of horticulture and forestry.
Unfortunately, the performance is very pedestrian. The reader has a very agreeable voice but something about the intonation very much sounds like it is being read to a bunch of ten year olds. Also, there are some very strange pronunciations which contribute to this effect. For example, the word “gardener” in British English is usually pronounced “gard’ner” rather than “gar-den-er”. Likewise “math’matishn” rather than “math-a-matician”. Someone who is against me is my “ADversary”, not my “adVERsary”. I think most people would say that Napoleon was exiled to “St. He-LEE-na “ regather than “Saint HELena”. Further, 1.68m is “one point six eight meters” not “one point sixty eight meters”. That’s also not only about a centimeter less than 1.8m, as claimed. There are countless other examples. Some of these are my opinion but some are just wrong.
This is a good book that may be better in print.

Historia
Lisa Damour, PhD, director of the internationally renowned Laurel School's Center for Research on Girls, pulls back the curtain on the teenage years and shows why your daughter's erratic and confusing behavior is actually healthy, necessary, and natural. Untangled explains what's going on, prepares parents for what's to come, and lets them know when it's time to worry.

This helped me
Revisado: 06-02-21
We recently uncovered a load of bizarre stuff about my 15 yo daughter. This book opened my eyes to a her point of view. One of the best lines - possibly quoted from elsewhere- was essentially: behavior that would be diagnosed as sociopathic in an adult can still be within normal range for a teen!

Historia
George Orwell depicts a gray, totalitarian world dominated by Big Brother and its vast network of agents, including the Thought Police - a world in which news is manufactured according to the authorities' will and people live tepid lives by rote. Winston Smith, a hero with no heroic qualities, longs only for truth and decency. But living in a social system in which privacy does not exist and where those with unorthodox ideas are brainwashed or put to death, he knows there is no hope for him.

Orwell's nightmare future, penned over half a century ago, seems to gain credence in the crazy, post-truth world we now inhabit.
