High testosterone violence starring a “super-agent”
Revisado: 04-19-25
I’m not a fan of a flawless hero who solves all problems with perfect execution and extraordinary skill. This guy’s suite of skills is all about killing and torture. Give me a real human being like the one in Marc Cameron’s series starring Arliss Cutter, Deputy US Marshal stationed in Alaska. It’s as good as this story is bad.

Historia
The story of the world's largest, longest, and best-financed scientific expedition of all time, triumphantly successful, gruesomely tragic, and never before fully told. The immense 18th-century scientific journey, variously known as the Second Kamchatka Expedition or the Great Northern Expedition, from St. Petersburg across Siberia to the coast of North America, involved over 3,000 people and cost Peter the Great over one-sixth of his empire's annual revenue.

Good exploration story, boring narrator
Revisado: 03-14-25
I so much wanted to hear this story about a great but little known exploration. It’s my kind of history. But the narrator used the same inflection for practically every sentence and I just couldn’t make it to the end.

Historia
The island of Iwo Jima was the epic land and sea battle that produced one of the iconic images of WWII: the Marines raising the American flag on Mount Surabachi, an active volcano that was the site of intense hand to hand combat. In this gripping novel, P. T. Deutermann follows a young gunnery liaison officer, Lee Bishop, who during the ferocious battle for the island is pulled from his station aboard the USS Nevada to serve onshore as a spotter, calling in coordinates for the ship to target with missiles.

PT shows off his knowledge of WWII naval gunnery in context of weak story
Revisado: 03-03-25
I gave up on this after two hours of listening. I had learned a lot about how gunnery worked on the USS Nevada, but there was very little actual story. And the narrator was tedious. I’ve listened to every WWII novel PT has written and I am a big fan, but this one is a dud.

Historia
It's not the dead body - Jack Leightner has seen hundred of bodies in his tour with the NYPD. It's not the dank setting - the narrow banks along Brooklyn's Gowanus Canal. So why does the sight of the fatally stabbed young man make the detective almost faint in the canal's tangled weeds? Jack doesn't understand why he becomes obsessed with this low-priority case, why he allows it to jeopardize his career and even his life. Especially since the investigation draws him exactly where he doesn't want to go: into the heart of Red Hook.

A mystery and more
Revisado: 03-01-25
4-1/2 stars: This story is centered on a mystery, but it is just as much about the life of the person who happens to be the detective on the case. If a reader is more intent on finding a thrilling mystery, this is probably not the best choice. But if you might enjoy a character study of a man who happens to be a good detective, try this.

Historia
Three shotgun blasts rip through the side of Officer Jim Chee's trailer as the Navajo Tribal Policeman sleeps. He survives, but the inexplicable attack has raised disturbing questions about a lawman once beyond reproach. Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn wonders why Chee was a target and what connection the assault has to a series of gruesome murders that has been plaguing the reservation. But the investigation is leading them both into a nightmare of ritual, witchcraft, and blood . . . and into the dark and mystical domain of evil beings of Navajo legend, the "skinwalkers."

Chee and Leaphorn in the same story, first time
Revisado: 02-22-25
Chee and Leaphorn are very different police officers, the one being relatively new to the Navajo police and the other with 20 years experience. Hillerman uses their differences to highlight their personalities, as they work and think in very different ways. I have read all the books this far in the series and this is my favorite so far.

Grim Norwegian noir
Revisado: 02-20-25
This installment is much more grim and dark than the first two, which I thought were very good procedurals. I would not have begun this third episode had I known just how grim and depressing it is. If “noir” is your thing, then proceed at your own risk. You might actually like it. And what the heck—it’s free after all.

Excellent thriller that overcomes lackluster narration
Revisado: 02-17-25
Great episodic story with several twists. But the narrator was flat and made little effort to distinguish the voices of the various characters. A truly good narrator would have made this a top notch audio novel instead of just a good one.

I took this book because it was cheap or free, I don’t remember which. I’m usually disappointed in today’s SciFi so I’m reluctant to spend a credit. But it is much better than average, IMHO, and worth a credit to go back and get book one. It has the right mix of action and suspense that suits my taste.

Historia
Two Native American boys have vanished into thin air, leaving a pool of blood behind them. Lieutenant Joe Leaphorn of the Navajo Tribal Police has no choice but to suspect the very worst, since the blood that stains the parched New Mexican ground once flowed through the veins of one of the missing, a young ZuNi. But his investigation into a terrible crime is being complicated by an important archaeological dig and a steel hypodermic needle.

It took patience to get through a very slow start, setting the stage, but the end was very exciting. It didn’t end as I might have wished, but it was still worth reading—4.5 stars.
