Great story with characters you care about! Action/mystery with great dialog and pacing that you won't want to put down.

Emo
Revisado: 01-02-23
Great series, I have very much enjoyed, but the last 2 books have wallowed in emo maudlin repetition of the MCs "growth" and reaction to his experiences. Back to more action and plot progression and less navel gazing please

Historia
This, the first in the splendid series of Jack Aubrey novels, establishes the friendship between Captain Aubrey, Royal Navy, and Stephen Maturin, ship's surgeon and intelligence agent, against the thrilling backdrop of the Napoleonic wars. Details of life aboard a man-of-war in Nelson's navy are faultlessly rendered: the conversational idiom of the officers in the ward room and the men on the lower deck, the food, the floggings, the mysteries of the wind and the rigging, and the road of broadsides as the great ships close in battle.

The narrator is great overall, but good God, drink something or do what you have to do, but stop swallowing and swishing your spit around in your mouth while narrating!

Horrible narration
Revisado: 03-11-22
Ive never left a review before, but the clash between the story and quality of writing and the flat narration with constant mispronunciations drove me to this. I never read the books but they still shine through his flaccid, disinterested, rookie reading.
The books are worth the listen. Ax Norman needs to read soporifics.
