Some useful information - but now in 2025 it already seems somewhat outdated and likely a little light on major new insights for some. An easy (audible) read, and probably enjoyable for most.

A window into a part of American history offering insights into capitalism, socialism, religion and geopolitics during a very formative period of natural and unnatural alliances, divided loyalties, wars and conflicted priorities, some of which remain today.

The Chinese Long Game: Hollowing out America

Well researched and attributed - names names, highlights serious self-serving conflicts of interest by our current political leadership in both parties when it comes to their support for China (or their silence or lack of criticism of China’s actions harmful to America).

If you are familiar with “The Art of War” by the ancient Chinese military strategist Sun Tzu, this book demonstrates how China’s Central Communist Party is implementing those same strategies against America and the West today.

You can then draw your own conclusions about why America is politically polarized, drug addicted, and brain dead from social media and video gaming, and why politicians Gavin Newsom, Mitch McConnell, and many others - may be part of the problem, as are we, the American public.

Having toured large cathedrals across Europe and marveling at the architecture and design of these memorable buildings, this book did wonders in helping understand why they appear as they do without requiring a degree in engineering. A fabulous book that describes the unique design and construction of the largest and tallest church dome at the time in the Cathedral of Santa Maria del Fiore in Florence Italy, completed in 1434. Unsupported during construction using traditional scaffolding for dome centering - the church is still standing and is the fourth largest in the world. The book is a history book, an architectural digest, a book of intrigue and rivalries, and a book about the creative genius of a man whose influence can still be seen today.

Although a complete fiction, Jacobsen has done enough research - with copious references to notable authorities and sources - that the civilization-ending scenario she offers is somewhat plausible.

If the nuclear war scenario comes to pass, book reviews will no longer be relevant, but we humans will at least leave this planet with a better understanding of why cockroaches and scorpions can survive without AI, SCADA systems, WMD’s, mad kings and potentially inept leadership of any stripe.

Stuck in Neutral - Environmentalists vs Green Energy Transition

It’s hard to make progress when the federal administration has its feet firmly and simultaneously planted on the brakes and the accelerator, sometimes wavering inexplicably between the two to satisfy one group or another and to curry voter favor. Democracy is a great thing, but windsock leadership isn’t helping make quality decisions that assures America’s energy and security independence. The author takes no sides and lets readers decide for themselves what the appropriate balance should be between extreme environmentalism, economic realities and the potential for profit making, and the role for a talking head government where agencies spend millions working at cross purposes - making the USA “uninvestible” for mining raw materials needed for the green energy transition. The author provides no answers, doesn’t lean one way or the other, but provides a wealth of well-researched factual, scientific, and technical information told in a wonderful style that lets the reader decide. Very well-written and narrated book that isn’t just a sound-bite.
