This book actually made me cry!Really endearing, well fleshed out characters and believable growth of friendship and love between the two characters. Story of blending cultures and families in tough circumstances. The world building, especially the political stuff and spiritual beliefs of the culture were intriguing. I could have done without some of the sex scenes, but they were well written. Just an overall charming and fantastic book. I can’t wait to read more by this author.

More existential crisis than mystery

Not a typical murder mystery. More a character study of how the human condition manifests itself through isolation and addiction. While not what I expected, a thoughtful, slow paced and intriguing read that’s worth your time.

Great acting, but writer focused on creating antithesis instead of creating a great narrative. Superb voice acting and production couldn’t carry the subpar story and unappealing characters. Also it wasn’t funny.

Kind of predictable. One of the narrators made all the characters sound the same so it was hard to differentiate. Not my favorite by Barclay.

Beautiful story with well developed characters, a strong sense of place and a slow burning love story.

Great story, but someone dropped the ball on the language. Incredibly jarring to hear the k-word (equivalent to the n-word) used over and over to describe black South Africans. This kind of language is typically edited out of Christie stories. I'm pretty disappointed.

Problematic depiction of women and setting

I can’t believe this book was released in 2012. Frankly the descriptions of the Sudd and the depictions of women made me uncomfortable. The Sudd was described as a hell, but people live there. It’s like what is implied when people describe a neighborhood as “bad”. It seemed to be an outdated and ethnocentric view of a place from a western (European)standpoint. The depiction of women as either vengeful monsters or delicate beings that needed to be rescued and protected was grating and offensive. The women in this book were merely props. There’s a scene where a woman is verbally and nearly physically attacked and the way the characters reacted was vile and unbelievable. These glaring problems, combined with the slow plot, the lack of characterization, and the messed up story telling ruin what was an interesting premise. It’s like this book was written in 1940 by an author who has never met an actual woman.

A girl and her grandpa

This sweet and funny story focuses heavily on the love between the protagonist and her grandfather. Those who like the effort Zapata gives to fleshing our supporting characters will like this, but it did leave the romance to be a bit bland and less sexually tense than her other works. It’s no Kulti, but I cried and laughed my way through this story.

I think my review headline says it all. Either I've changed or Krentz, who used to be a go-to author for me, has. I gave up on this about 20 mins in.

Hilarious and heartwarming tale about a tortured rake and a repressed geologist. Genuinely funny with character development that makes the hero and heroine endearing. I usually only listen to romance novels once but I predict that this is going to become an old favorite that I listen to again and again.
