Historia
Here are the thrills, grandeur, and unabashed fun of the Greek myths, stylishly retold by Stephen Fry. The legendary writer, actor, and comedian breathes life into ancient tales, from Pandora's box to Prometheus's fire, and transforms the adventures of Zeus and the Olympians into emotionally resonant and deeply funny stories, without losing any of their original wonder. Learned notes from the author offer rich cultural context. This volume is a doorway into a captivating world.

Fry's love for words made the magic in this book
Revisado: 05-20-21
My favorite parts of this book are when Stephen Fry really let's his big curious brain show. He clearly has a love of etymology and that's when the stories really came to life for me. The first half of the book kept me riveted with the stories of the Titans and Creation and then the Olympians as Fry connected the dots from these ancient stories to our every day words and geography. I was less interested in the 2nd half with the stories of the Olympians and humans but so it goes.

Historia
In the house of Helios, god of the sun and mightiest of the Titans, a daughter is born. But Circe is a strange child—not powerful, like her father, nor viciously alluring like her mother. Turning to the world of mortals for companionship, she discovers that she does possess power—the power of witchcraft, which can transform rivals into monsters and menace the gods themselves.

I didn't think I could feel this way again
Revisado: 11-05-19
As a child and teen I read a lot and was captivated by so much of what I read. Authors like Gary Paulsen, Jean Craighead George, and Brian Jacques made me into the woman I am. In spite of (or because of this) I am not nearly so taken by the books I read now. I still have a desire for great adventure and discovery of the world by unlikely heroes. Add to this my yearning for some nuance, sex, and feminist themes in my adult reading. I usually turn to nonfiction as I find that meets these needs better than most adult fiction I try. Then came Circe and with it (and her incredible narrator) I feel like a kid again.

Some people are meant to travel the globe, to unwrap its secrets, and share them with the world. And some people have no sense of direction, are terrified of pigeons, and get motion sickness from tying their shoes. These people are meant to stay home and eat nachos. Geraldine DeRuiter is the latter. But she won't let that stop her. Hilarious, irreverent, and heartfelt, All over the Place chronicles the years Geraldine spent traveling the world after getting laid off from a job she loved.

I found this to be boring which surprised me
Revisado: 03-11-18
Oh dear I found this to be very boring after a promising start. The author reads her own book which is always a delight and she does a good job here. The material is just not that funny or interesting. I bought it after reading some hilarious blog posts and Times humor articles of hers. She mainly talks about her family and husband in mostly serious and loving terms which is awesome for her. I'm glad she has them in her life but IMO I don't know them and after several chapters of the same thing I was ready to move on to another topic but she never did.

Historia
In this intriguing business novel, which illustrates state-of-the-art economic theory, Alex Rogo is a UniCo plant manager whose factory and marriage are failing. To revitalize the plant, he follows piecemeal advice from an elusive former college professor who teaches, for example, that reduction in the efficiency of some plant operations may make the entire operation more productive. Alex's attempts to find the path to profitability and to engage his employees in the struggle involve the listener; and thankfully the authors' economic models.

Not a very good business book, even worse novel
Revisado: 01-04-18
What disappointed you about The Goal?
This was assigned to me by my boss. It's not my style at all. I'm not opposed to the business content in the book I just don't want it written as a novel. It's a terrible novel. And sexist. Clearly written before many women had roles other than wives and assistants. If I need to take in non-fiction reference material give it to me in a non-fiction reference format.
What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?
I did not care for performance type of reading. Though if you like that kind of thing it seems like all the voices were good fits for the characters.
If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from The Goal?
I would have removed all the information and put it in bullet point format. Could probably get it down to a page or two double spaced.

Historia
John Hodgman - New York Times best-selling author, semifamous personality, deranged millionaire, increasingly elderly husband, father, and human of Earth - has written a memoir about his cursed travels through two wildernesses: from the woods of his home in Massachusetts, birthplace of rage, to his exile on the coast of Maine, so-called Vacationland, home to the most painful beaches on Earth.

Enjoyable read but ended up being a bit different
Revisado: 01-02-18
Where does Vacationland rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Very enjoyable. I was expecting humorous retellings of his family's vacations. It's almost but not quite that. I liked it a lot however. He's self-aware in a refreshing way. It's really my kind of humor. There are a few misteps, for instance his frequent imploring of his children to not smoke pot is silly I think.
Have you listened to any of John Hodgman’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I have not but I probably will seek out more.

Doug Stanhope is one of the most critically acclaimed and stridently unrepentant comedians of his generation. What will surprise some is that he owes so much of his dark and sometimes uncomfortably honest sense of humor to his mother, Bonnie.

Not for me
Revisado: 01-02-18
What disappointed you about Digging Up Mother?
It's not what I thought it was. I don't know who the comedian is and I thought from the book's description that it wasn't necessary. But it is. The rave reviews must be from his fans as I just didn't appreciate the book. I was looking more for a memoir about an unconventional woman and the format and content of this book just didn't deliver what I expected.
What could Doug Stanhope and Johnny Depp - foreword have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?
I didn't appreciate the commentary. I would have preferred a straight story, more or less chronological.
What didn’t you like about Doug Stanhope and Friends’s performance?
I didn't care for the podcast style and wanted to skip over the commentary but it didn't seem to be clearly separated in a way that I could skip just those sections.
