Historia
Tupac Shakur is one of the greatest and most controversial artists of all time. More than a quarter of a century after his tragic death in 1996 at the age of just twenty-five, he continues to be one of the most misunderstood, complicated, and prolific figures in modern history. Drawing on exclusive access to Tupac’s private notebooks, letters, and uncensored conversations with those who loved and knew him best, this estate-authorized biography paints the fullest and most intimate picture to date of the young man who became a legend for generations to come.

THE WORST NARRATOR
Revisado: 03-05-25
The narrator of this book was beyond irritating and highly distracting. He pronounces his words so poorly that I wanted to stop listening several times, and I had to take breaks to get through this audiobook. He sounds like he has a mouth full of rocks, while simultaneously seemingly to make up pronunciation rules as he goes. For example, sometimes Tupac is Tupac, but other times, he calls him TuPACK. He does the same thing with Nas, sometimes calling him Naz (with a short -a sound). Most irritating, though, was the narrator’s mispronunciation of the letters -r and -h. Here are some examples: partickely (particularly), pwoductivity (productivity), Intooscope (Interscope), Shuckoowuh (Shakur), Youz (Hughes), You-ey (Huey). I remember suffering through an audiobook read by this guy before, but never again. Whoever hires him as a narrator is doing a massive injustice to the books because he keeps the content from being enjoyable.

Historia
Julia Fox is famous for many things: her captivating acting, such as her breakout role in the film Uncut Gems; her trendsetting style, including bleached eyebrows, exaggerated eyeshadow, and cutout dresses; her mastery of social media, where she entertains and educates her millions of followers. But all these share the trait for which she is most famous: unabashedly and unapologetically being herself. This commitment to authenticity has never been more on display than in Down the Drain. With writing that is both eloquent and accessible, Fox recounts her turbulent path to cultural supremacy.

Julia’s first book is a masterpiece, if I do say so myself.
Revisado: 10-14-23
I, like so many others, have been wondering, “Who’s the weird white girl with the big butt?” The one who loves art, hip hop, fashion, and writing, but is slightly unhinged? It’s Julia Fox, but it’s also me, which is why I needed to hear her story. Real recognize real, and Aquarius recognizes Aquarius, so I’ve been impatiently waiting for the book to drop. It’s been on preorder for months, and it did not disappoint.
Julia’s life is truly fascinating (and tragic in some aspects), and the book is a testament to her honesty, individuality, and self awareness. One thing I particularly love is the way she balances openness for the readers, and respect for the people in her stories. However, that level of respect has me scouring the internet trying to find out who Rohan and the unnamed movie star are… 😅 Now, referring to Kanye as “the artist” is genius because as far as I’m concerned, Kanye is THE artist and I love the way Julia told their story respectfully, yet honestly. After all, even Ye fans can acknowledge his extreme quirks, and Julia impressively captured them without being unkind.
She certainly has a gift for storytelling, and her hustle and cultural influence are captivating. Her life is a movie, and… “who better to play Julia than Julia?” 💛✨

Historia
In 2013 Assata Shakur, founding member of the Black Liberation Army, former Black Panther and godmother of Tupac Shakur, became the first ever woman to make the FBI's most wanted list. Assata Shakur's trial and conviction for the murder of a white State Trooper in the spring of 1973 divided America. Her case quickly became emblematic of race relations and police brutality in the USA. While Assata's detractors continue to label her a ruthless killer, her defenders cite her as the victim of a systematic, racist campaign.

Wonderful
Revisado: 05-18-23
I’ve wanted to learn about Assata ever since I heard Common’s 2000 album in which he dedicates a song to her life story. The book filled in the details of the framework set by the song. 💛💛💛
Although I began feeling a little restless toward the book’s end, the actual ending felt a bit abrupt. I think that’s because we don’t know the specifics of Assata’s escape to Cuba. Overall, the book was informative and interesting, and Assata gracefully rode the line between bold and direct, while remaining classy and gentle.
Performance: the narrator added inflection to incorrect and random words and syllables. Also, as she reads, one can hear the inner workings of her mouth. 😬

Great Message/Bothersome Delivery
Revisado: 03-18-23
The message and support this book offers is great, although the author speaks from an un-relatable place of privilege (hence 4 stars). I’ve done the fast twice. I’d like to listen a third time, continuing to refine the fast each time, but I don’t think I can handle the narrator’s voice anymore. The way the words are pronounced is glaringly unnatural, with the D’s clipped and the S’s pronounced in different forms of lisped and SZ sounds. Because she pronounces the same words differently, even within the same sentence, it feels very unnatural and is deeply distracting from the message. I hope the author allows someone else to narrate her next book so the message takes center stage rather the performance-heavy, odd and inconsistent pronunciation of words and sounds.

Terrible Narrator
Revisado: 02-25-23
Within the first few seconds, I knew I couldn’t handle 8 hours of the narrator’s irritating voice and grating pronunciations. I almost decided to forgo the book based on the narration, but it was to be read for a book club. Instead, I sped up the book which was helpful.

Narrator Needs Improvement
Revisado: 01-16-23
The narrator had a snooty intonation even when it wasn’t necessary. He frequently emphasized the wrong words, and didn’t read as the text instructed. For example, there were several times when the text said such things as, “she said kindly”, yet it was read with the same drab and snooty attitude the narrator carried throughout.

Historia
When Tate Collins meets airline pilot Miles Archer, she doesn't think it's love at first sight. They wouldn’t even go so far as to consider themselves friends. The only thing Tate and Miles have in common is an undeniable mutual attraction. Once their desires are out in the open, they realize they have the perfect set-up. He doesn’t want love, she doesn’t have time for love, so that just leaves the sex. Their arrangement could be surprisingly seamless, as long as Tate can stick to the only two rules Miles has for her.

Horrible Performance
Revisado: 03-03-22
Firstly, the male character’s voice is horrendous. He pronounces words so strangely and annoyingly. It’s impossible to believe the character described would ever speak in the manner presented.
Secondly, the story and writing style aren’t worth the listen. The female’s internal dialogue was especially off-putting as she seemed silly and desperate, and the metaphors and imagery are forced. I continued to listen mainly because of a book club, but I also was curious about the man’s secret, which was absolutely underwhelming; and the resolution was completely ridiculous. There’s also a random, wise old man who really wasn’t necessary, but again, so many elements were forced in this book. It’s so absurd that it’s unintentionally comical.

Forced
Revisado: 02-26-22
The book started out well but became increasingly nonsensical. There are so many forced “connections” and assumptions. The gloom, the mold, the golden flecks, the golden blur, the snakes, the amber rings, the gold, the mist, the fish heads… so many unnecessary and scattered symbols. It reminds me of when my fourth graders try to write halloween stories on a whim. It’s absolute absurdity.

Historia
Lala Reyes’ grandmother is descended from a family of renowned rebozo, or shawl-makers. The striped (caramelo) is the most beautiful of all, and the one that makes its way, like the family history it has come to represent, into Lala’s possession. The novel opens with the Reyes’ annual car trip - a caravan overflowing with children, laughter, and quarrels - from Chicago to “the other side”, Mexico City. It is there, each year, that Lala hears her family’s stories, separating the truth from the “healthy lies” that have ricocheted from one generation to the next.

Obnoxious and Annoying
Revisado: 07-01-21
This is the absolute worst book I’ve ever heard on Audible. The story is completely aimless and impossible to follow, with a ridiculous translation. The narrator’s voice, inflection and overall presentation is the definition of “cringe”. It was painfully annoying and literally made my skin crawl. I always finish the books I begin, but I simply couldn’t bear another second of this horrendous narrative. I asked the members of my book club if it was worth attempting to finish and they all said NO. There’s nothing positive I can say about this book.
