Historia
No visitors. No nights spent away from the apartment. No disturbing the other residents, all of whom are rich or famous or both. These are the only rules for Jules Larsen’s new job as an apartment sitter at the Bartholomew, one of Manhattan's most high-profile and mysterious buildings. As she gets to know the residents and staff of the Bartholomew, Jules finds herself drawn to fellow apartment sitter Ingrid. When Ingrid confides that the Bartholomew is not what it seems, Jules brushes it off as a harmless ghost story...until the next day, when Ingrid disappears.

Title is deceiving
Revisado: 11-02-23
This book tried hard to being an American Gothic. Instead of English Mansions, we have the Bartholomew Hotel. Instead of a poor governess, we have a poor, unemployed girl looking to put money in a bank account (by the-way, she also has no family.) Instead of a good-looking master of the manor, we have good-looking Dr. Nick, kingpin at the extravagant Bartholomew Hotel. Then we finally find out what really goes on at this extravagent hotel where only the rich live, and according to good-looking Dr. Nick, should never suffer serious illness. Enter the poor girls who think they struck it rich!
Of course, how would a good gothic story end? Yep, a fire that burns the place down.

Historia
Narrator Dan Stevens ( Downton Abbey) presents an uncanny performance of Mary Shelley's timeless gothic novel, an epic battle between man and monster at its greatest literary pitch. In trying to create life, the young student Victor Frankenstein unleashes forces beyond his control, setting into motion a long and tragic chain of events that brings Victor to the very brink of madness. How he tries to destroy his creation, as it destroys everything Victor loves, is a powerful story of love, friendship, scientific hubris, and horror.

How did I never read this!
Revisado: 10-05-23
The answer to my headline probably is that I saw the movie and it scared me too much to think of the book.. However, this is more than a book of horror. It is about a man solving the mystery of death; and when he does, he hates his very own creation. A very interesting tale.

Slow start
Revisado: 10-05-23
I almost give up listening. The first third of this novel did not feel like a Kate Morton Book. It almost felt like someone else wrote the beginning and Kate Morton finished the middle and end. The ending almost felt rushed .... too many loose ends to explain. I have read all of her books and this was my least favorite.

The best of the best
Revisado: 05-02-23
Although they scatter humor in all the murders they broadcast, you can become addicted to listening to more and more episodes. James and Jimmy NEVER disappoint. I appreciate all the info they give on the small towns reviews, which is very interesting. Sometimes I am laughing so hard I have to re-wind the audio and listen again. Of course, the murder themselves are horrible, and they never joke about the victims.... it's the people who do the murders and/or the police investigations that can be truly hilarious. This is definitely my favorite podcast in the true crime category.

Narration made this impossible for audio
Revisado: 04-22-23
This could have been a good novel if it wasn't for narration. It was theatrical and hoakey on a story that probably was good. I could not finish it. At one point, she did a voice so horrendous, I thought there was a problem with my tablet.

Set in the mountains of southern Appalachia, Demon Copperhead is the story of a boy born to a teenaged single mother in a single-wide trailer, with no assets beyond his dead father’s good looks and copper-colored hair, a caustic wit, and a fierce talent for survival. Relayed in his own unsparing voice, Demon braves the modern perils of foster care, child labor, derelict schools, athletic success, addiction, disastrous loves, and crushing losses.

Devon to Demon?
Revisado: 04-22-23
The narrator makes this novel worth reading. He does an amazing job keeping the characters recognizable.
Devon begins the book as an 11-year-old with a tragic backstory. It is amazing how this little boy copes. And yet, as he got older his life doesn't get better. It is filled with tragedy with flickers of happiness sparingly given.
Foster care, social workers, placement from one foster home to another, and any government agency to assist a young boy fails. This can go only one way: a downward spiral to a young boy, and then a young man with great potential. His survival is amazing and makes for a great read.

Although this is the final installment of the series there could be a book 4. Phillippa Gregory never disappoints. Although she moves out of the Tudor Reign, these trio of book were immensely enjoyable. And, the narrator was superb.

A woman like you...
Revisado: 01-25-23
A woman like Elinor was just too kind, too loving, too forgiving, and much more than she gave herself credit for. She was too good for any man that entered her life.
Philippa Gregory steps out of the Tudor reign and moves forward to the mid 17th century. King Charles I is being tried for treason. James is a priest turned spy and falls in love with Elinor. This is not your sticky sweet love story. If it was, I would have turned off the audio. Elinor is just way too good for him and too bad she doesn't realize her worth. She lives in poverty and works harder than any animal. She perseveres in a small village ... she is a midwife and a healer. The people of the Tideland love her as long as she keeps serving their needs. They are all very poor, but there is still a class domination. It's poor, poorer, and the poorest.
You will walk the Tidelands with Elinor and her family. Philippa Gregory will put you there.
The narration is wonderful. There are parts of this novel that will move you to tears. It certainly did to me. I didn't want it to end...especially an ending that I didn't see coming.
I will definitely look forward to the next installment of the Tidelands.
