Historia
It’s 1663 in the tiny, hardscrabble Dutch colony of New Amsterdam, now present-day Manhattan. Orphan children are going missing, and among those looking into the mysterious state of affairs are a 22-year-old trader, Blandine von Couvering, herself an orphan, and a British spy named Edward Drummond. Both the search for the killer and Edward and Blandine’s newfound romance are endangered, however, when Blandine is accused of being a witch and Edward is sentenced to hang for espionage.

An intriguing blend!
Revisado: 07-05-12
What made the experience of listening to The Orphanmaster the most enjoyable?
George Guidall is the perfect narrator for The Orphanmaster! His deep voice, pace, obvious literacy with several languages, and just plain story-telling abilities, renders this a totally enjoyable audiobook.
What other book might you compare The Orphanmaster to and why?
The Orphanmaster is historical fiction, heavy on both history and fiction, residing in the Dutch colony of New Amsterdam (what would be come lower Mahnattan). I remember getting a slight feeling of Jack The Ripper, Sherlock Holmes, Dances With Wolves, and The Winter Sea, not in the story-lines, rather a tinge of understory.
Which character – as performed by George Guidall – was your favorite?
George Guidall, the narrator, nailed the characterization of the Orphanmaster!
Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?
I was particularly moved by the scene where the Orphanmaster... Well, that wouldn't be nice of me to divulge, lol!
Any additional comments?
The author has pulled together an amazing amount of historical information and coupled it with just the right amount of political intrigue, superstitious myth (or is it really?), romance, and even a sort of feminism of the time period. It's a read to be savored for it's informative content, sub-stories, and implications. I loved the character development and the way the characters (there are many) are carefully introduced. The novel is beautifully paced and structured. You can tell I loved it, I gave it 5 stars.

Charming rendition of a Changeling story.
Revisado: 07-01-12
Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?
Yes, I would recommend Arcadia Falls to a friend! I'm particularly interested in faery tale renditions and love the variety of possible interpretations of the Changeling story. Arcadia Falls is an uncomplicated story about complicated issues and the layers of sub-stories effectively highlight some social issues as well, in a non-judgemental way. Even more, it's a sweet story and a lovely read. Descriptions are wonderful.

Historia
History has all but forgotten.... In the spring of 1708, an invading Jacobite fleet of French and Scottish soldiers nearly succeeded in landing the exiled James Stewart in Scotland to reclaim his crown. Now, Carrie McClelland hopes to turn that story into her next best-selling novel. Settling herself in the shadow of Slains Castle, she creates a heroine named for one of her own ancestors and starts to write. But then she discovers her novel is more fact than fiction....

Enjoyed every aspect of The Secret Scripture
Revisado: 06-12-12
If you could sum up The Secret Scripture in three words, what would they be?
Three words to sum up The Secret Scripture? Well, endearing, shocking, graceful.
What did you like best about this story?
I sincerely loved dear old Roseanne.
Have you listened to any of Wanda McCaddon’s other performances before? How does this one compare?
I had not listened to Wanda McCaddon's performances prior to this, but I won't hesitate to purchase any audiobook narrated by her. She is a fantastic narrator, switching up dialogues seamlessly, speaking at a steady pace, pauses and inflections were perfect. A true delight to listen to Ms McCaddon perform The Secret Garden.
Who was the most memorable character of The Secret Scripture and why?
Roseanne was the most memorable character, although it was easy enough to develop a fondness for (almost) all of the characters. To find out why, well, you'll need to listen!
Any additional comments?
This is a true keeper. So glad I purchased The Secret Scripture.
