Kept me interested right until the end. I kept waiting for the other shoe to drop and I won't say if it did or didn't. Definitely worth the read.

“On the Surface” by Rachel McGuire is the ultimate summer read—a riveting psychological thriller that navigates the glamorous yet perilous world of social media influencers living the high-seas lifestyle. This expertly crafted novel sets sail into the treacherous waters of digital fame, where every glimmer of luxury hides deeper currents of suspense.

The story centers on Sawyer Stone III and Dani Fox, a young couple who cruise the globe while documenting their maritime adventures on their YouTube channel. Their life seems like smooth sailing until Dani vanishes under mysterious circumstances after a lavish boat party. As Sawyer’s memories of the fateful night remain foggy, the suspense and intrigue intensify.

The search for Dani reveals disturbing secrets about their relationship and Sawyer’s murky past, all while the internet’s speculation adds to the pressure to the investigation. The rising tensions and unexpected twists kept me reading into the night.

For an immersive experience, I highly recommend the audio version. It unfolds like a gripping true-crime podcast, with multiple voice actresses navigating the narrative expertly, bringing each character vividly to life and enhancing the overall experience.

“On the Surface” is perfect for fans of “The Girl on the Train” and “Gone Girl,” offering a thrilling blend of intrigue, drama, and unexpected turns. It’s a must-read for those seeking a compelling and thought-provoking adventure through the complex world of influencers and the high-stakes thrill of the open sea.

Beautifully crafted and realistic depiction of small-town life. The story unfolds when the protagonist (Kelly) goes through a divorce and leaves California for her hometown, Geneva, IL, she ends up moving into an apartment above her sister Nikki’s chocolate shop. As she writes her latest novel, elements from her past, both good and bad, resurface.

The narration and dialogue, enriched by the narrator’s skill at distinct and lively voices, brought the characters to life in a way that felt like sitting down for coffee with old friends. The conversations and interactions among the characters were engaging and authentic.

Highly recommend and look forward to more books from this talented author, who, together with the gifted narrator, has created a truly immersive and enjoyable experience.

Extra star for the yummy Red Velvet Recipe. I love when authors put that much thought into their novels.
