Not much of a story
Revisado: 02-18-25
Admittedly, I am only six chapters in, but this fourth book in the series is fairly boring. It is primarily the mid-life introspection of two characters, neither of whom is particularly interesting in this book. They had more depth in the previous books in the series, even though one was only a minor character until this book. Thus far, there hasn’t been the undercurrent of humor found in previous books, just dry self-reflection. I’ll finish it only because it is part of the series.

Not the best entry in the series
Revisado: 02-02-25
The Riyria Revelations series is great and I definitely recommend reading that series of stories. This third book of the prequel Riyria Chronicles appears to have been written with no awareness of Hadrian’s experience that is the background of the beginning of these stories. He annoyingly makes so many stupid decisions in this book that he is almost unrecognizable as the character in the first two books of this series, and he certainly bears no resemblance to the character in the Revelations series. I forced myself to finish this book but am not sure I’ll read the next one in the Chronicles series.

Narrator Issue
Revisado: 04-27-24
The story is good but the narrator’s poor distinction between the individual voices is so disruptive to listening that I had to force myself to finish the book. Her voice on the general narrative is excellent. However, her voice on individuals, particularly the two main characters, Devlin & Lovejoy, make them virtually indistinguishable from one another unless you note Devlin’s voice sometimes sounds as if he is on some kind of tranquilizer. I had to increase the speed just to make Devlin sound somewhat interested in what he was saying. Of course, that makes other characters sound like they are racing through conversation. Additionally, every book in the series notes that Lovejoy has a high-pitched voice. Apparently this narrator is unaware of that since she makes no effort to distinguish Lovejoy’s voice in that way. Again, it sounds the same as Devlin’s voice. If I am not carefully attuned, I have to go back to remind myself which one is talking. If the next book uses this same narrator, I will either pass on the rest of the series or read the book. This narrator is just too much work. Unfortunate, because I have really enjoyed listening to this series, more than once.

Good story; Terrible slurping noise narration
Revisado: 03-25-24
These stories are great. Amelia is a bit over the top as a character but the stories are good. The narrator does a good job with the various voices BUT the swallowing noises are so disgusting I can’t wait for the end of this story so I can be finished with the series and listening to all of the slurping, swallowing noises of the narrator. Regardless of her otherwise good narration, the noises are just too gross. I can’t listen to another book with this narrator.

Frustratingly Inconsistent Characters
Revisado: 12-16-23
Had I not first read the Christmas story, which was a pretty good story, I would not be able to make it through the series’ books. These women in the books are supposed to be capable and independent thinkers and yet they can’t seem to make simple leaps of reason in putting together information to reach conclusions about what may be going on. There are moments of insight and wisdom when advising others, followed by completely obtuse thinking, or lack of thought, when engaged in other conversations or thinking about their own situations. It makes for a frustrating read about weak characters.

Daniel’s angst is getting old!
Revisado: 09-14-23
Daniel is starting to come across as very petulant and self righteous. It is hard to see someone like Jason actually being drawn to the person Daniel has become. I have enjoyed the series but the last two books have been less enjoyable due to this increasing attitude in Daniel’s character. Otherwise the story was interesting and I’ll give the next one a shot, hoping Daniel’s character grows up. If not, I may give it up.

Inconsistent with previous books in the series
Revisado: 02-22-21
I really enjoyed The Butcher’s Boy series and have read or listened to the other three books in the series multiple times. The narration is great in all four books. However, there are multiple inconsistencies between the earlier books and this 4th book in the series. That was very distracting and diminished the story. I thought at several points in the book that it would have been helpful if the author had reread his first three books before writing the fourth. Among other things, this book reads as if the ending to The Informant doesn’t exist. For me, the limited value in this book is in some of the background information. I recommend the first three books in the series but am disappointed to say I don’t recommend this one and will not read it again. I also recommend Metgzer’s Dog by Thomas Perry, which is a great read.

The story is okay, although some ridiculous behavior that isn’t particularly funny, but I agree with the reviewers who note that the audio includes a lot of swallowing and saliva sounds by the narrator that are pretty stomach churning to listen to.
