Referring to the defensive moves white people make when challenged racially, white fragility is characterized by emotions such as anger, fear, and guilt and by behaviors including argumentation and silence. These behaviors, in turn, function to reinstate white racial equilibrium and prevent meaningful cross-racial dialogue.

If you are interested in having these conversations with your friends and family this book gives you a lot of great insight about the challenge facing you when you try to have these discussions and about how to best approach them.
