Historia
From a leading expert in Japanese history, this is one of the first full histories of the art and culture of the Samurai warrior. The Samurai emerged as a warrior caste in Medieval Japan and would have a powerful influence on the history and culture of the country from the next 500 years. Clements also looks at the Samurai wars that tore Japan apart in the 17th and 18th centuries and how the caste was finally demolished in the advent of the mechanized world.

Excellent book and narrator
Revisado: 09-12-19
This is an excellent book for anyone interested in the Samurai or the early Japanese feudal period.
Full of history, battles and anecdotes it is very interesting.
The narrator is very good and adds just enough emotion into his performance to be enjoyable.

Renowned historian Antony Beevor, the man who "single-handedly transformed the reputation of military history" (The Guardian) presents the first major account in more than 20 years of the Normandy invasion and the liberation of Paris. This is the first book to describe not only the experiences of the American, British, Canadian, and German soldiers, but also the terrible suffering of the French caught up in the fighting.

It was the most controversial naval battle of the 20th century. Statistically, both sides lost; but the British Fleet was readied for action again within 24 hours and dominated the seas for the rest of the First World War. This programme recreates the whole dramatic conflict.

Better than knowing nothing about the battle.

What would have made W4 The Battle of Jutland (Dramatised) better?
Must have been written for children because the amount of detail is very limited with many of the finer points being overlooked entirely.
Any additional comments?
Robert Massie's "Castles of Steel" has an excellent and thorough account of Jutland.

Historia
FNH Audio presents a reading of Charles Oman's classic military history A History of the Peninsular War. In this first volume, a detailed examination is made of the first years of the war, 1807 to 1809. The campaign is examined from both sides using reference materials from British, French, Spanish, and Portuguese sources. This book covers the invasion of Spain and Napoleon's trickery in luring the Spanish crown into prison. It also features Wellington's first peninsular battle and of course the famous retreat to Corunna and the battle at that place.

doesnt translate well into audiobook
Revisado: 03-29-13
Would you recommend A History of the Peninsular War 1807-1809 to your friends? Why or why not?
Yes
Which scene was your favorite?
Battle of Balin and Moore's retreat.
Any additional comments?
This is probably an excellant book but it doesnt translate well into an audiobook. With the obvious removal of maps the casual listener has very little idea where many of these Spanish towns are located in relation to eachother. And therefore cant fully appreciate the hows and whys of military operations in Spain and Portugal.
Still it is an exhaustive, thourough, enjoyable book.

Jeremy Black uses Waterloo to contextualise the changing nature of war, the rise and fall of Napoleon's empire, and the influence of the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic Wars on the nineteenth century. Waterloo was an iconic battle for the British, a triumph of endurance that ensured a nineteenth-century world in which Britain played the key role.

More about impact on Britain than the battle.
Revisado: 02-20-13
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
This book as the summary says is more about the impact of the battle on the conscience of Britain than a detailed account of the actual battle itself. After the battle is over the narrator drones on for another two hours talking about the construction of monuments and places in Britain named "waterloo".
How could the performance have been better?
The narrator sounded like he was eating during the entire performance.
Was The Battle of Waterloo worth the listening time?
Sadly, no.
