Historia
When the opossum feels threatened, she becomes paralyzed. Her body temperature plummets, her breathing and heart rates drop to a minimum, and her glands simulate the smell of a putrefying corpse. Playing Possum explores what the opossum and other creatures can teach us about how we and other species understand mortality, and demonstrates that the concept of death, far from being a uniquely human attribute, is widespread in the animal kingdom.

Fascinating and well delivered
Revisado: 11-08-24
The book, admittedly, is not for everyone but it's well researched and narrated with passion by Lisa Ware.

Historia
Despite his promising start as a young man, by his early 50s Chester A. Arthur was known as the crooked crony of New York machine boss Roscoe Conkling. For years Arthur had been perceived as unfit to govern, not only by critics and the vast majority of his fellow citizens but by his own conscience. As President James A. Garfield struggled for his life, Arthur knew better than his detractors that he failed to meet the high standard a president must uphold. And yet, from the moment President Arthur took office, he proved to be not just honest but brave.

Heitsch Shines
Revisado: 03-17-23
Arthur is an underappreciated President and he is rarely discussed unless one is chatting about the least memorable US Presidents -- and no one ever has discussions like that.
Whatever we know about Arthur is in this book and all of it is delivered with style and panache by Paul Heitsch. I think that Heitsch's clear, sharp narrative style and his respectful manner make this a wonderful listen. I can't imagine a better job could be done by any other actor.
If you're going to learn anything about Chester Arthur, there is no better way to do so than by listening to Greenberger's fine prose deftly handled by a skilled narrator.

Historia
James A. Garfield may have been the most extraordinary man ever elected president. Born into abject poverty, he rose to become a wunderkind scholar, a Civil War hero, and a renowned and admired reformist congressman. Nominated for president against his will, he engaged in a fierce battle with the corrupt political establishment. But four months after his inauguration, a deranged office seeker tracked Garfield down and shot him in the back. But the shot didn’t kill Garfield. The drama of what happened subsequently is a powerful story of a nation in turmoil.

Distracting Character Voices
Revisado: 06-09-22
An excellent and well researched story on James Garfield. The narration is excellent when it sticks to the story but Mr. Michael insists on doing "voices" for everyone regardless of the fact that he has no idea how any of these folks actually sound. And the voices border on the absurd and cartoonish. He even pitches his voice high to do the women in the story. I'm fighting through this to try to finish the book but I think this is a volume better read than heard.

Narrator makes it worthwhile!
Revisado: 11-07-18
This is pretty much of a text book and the only reason it works is the smooth voice and implied authority of the narrator. She speaks with knowledge and while the author throws out far too many Asian phrases and far too many repetitive thoughts, the book misses being bogged down because Ms. Perrin never flags. She is a delight to listen to and rises above the minutiae the author cannot resist including for some unknown reason.
NOTE:This book came out yesterday and within 1 minute of its release, some "reviewer" gave it a one-star review across the board. The book is 13 hours long! How can it get one star the second it's made available? -- it's a horrible thing to do - to denigrate artists work by giving the lowest ranking possible without even bothering to listen to the audiobook. Audible should not allow that to happen.
