Historia
It's AD 123, and the sun is shining on southern Gaul. Ex-military medic Ruso and his British wife, Tilla, are back after a long absence - but it's not the reunion anyone had hoped for. Ruso's brother has left him in charge of a farm he has no idea how to manage, a chronic debt problem, and a gaggle of accident-prone small children. Meanwhile his sister Flora has run away to rescue her boyfriend, who's accused of murdering a wealthy guest at a party.

Enjoyable and amusing
Revisado: 06-23-20
I found this look musing and entertaining as I tried to figure out exactly who the killer was. The characters were all amazingly entertaining and it held my attention to the very end. Simon Vance is an excellent narrator

Historia
In her small early-19th-century Welsh town, there is no one quite like Morgana. She is small and quick and pretty enough to attract a suitor, but there are things that set her apart from other girls. Though her mind is sharp she has not spoken since she was a young girl. Her silence is a mystery, as well as her magic - the household objects that seem to move at her command, the bad luck that visits those who do her ill. Concerned for her safety, her mother is anxious to see Morgana married....

Different storyline
Revisado: 02-13-19
I like the way the author didn’t fall back into the trite storylines where witches make everything come out perfectly. She didn’t bring every main character back to life as you might expect nor did she have her leading character miraculously speak at some tense moment.

Very enjoyable
Revisado: 04-11-18
I enjoyed this book from start to finish. I think I will listen to it again as I believe I missed some of the nuances of the detectives train of thought at some points. I'm sure I missed some things. Overall I found it fascinating and hated to put my iPad down when it was time to go to bed. Thanks for an enjoyable listen.

Bill Bryson has been an enormously popular author both for his travel books and for his books on the English language. Now, this beloved comic genius turns his attention to science. Although he doesn't know anything about the subject (at first), he is eager to learn, and takes information that he gets from the world's leading experts and explains it to us in a way that makes it exciting and relevant.

Mostly educational

Although some of the things that we talked about I already have an inkling of, there are many things that I really didn't know. I'm very surprised. Though some of his very interesting observations were a little deep for me I enjoyed most of them. I would recommend this book to anyone who is interested in history from the beginning of time.

Together at last
Revisado: 01-14-17
I enjoyed this book quite a bit. It held my interest wondering when The two protagonist would finally get together. The story held my interest as they came so close only to pass like two ships in the night.listening to the two translators comments at the end of the story has made me want to read other Japanese stories in translation. I would recommend this book to anyone who has the time to commit to the story.

Nearly a half century into being a feminist and legal pioneer, something funny happened to Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg: The octogenarian won the Internet. Across America, people who weren't even born when Ginsburg made her name are tattooing themselves with her face, setting her famously searing dissents to music, and making viral videos in tribute.

If you enjoy stories of battle warriors, and blood and guts descriptions, you will enjoy this book as well as the other Bernard Cornwell books this series. I personally fast forwarded over some of these descriptions. The general story is interesting and also gives you a glimpse of early England

Revisado: 02-21-16
After the first book I was left with many questions. The second book gave me all the answers I needed to the whys of all these people and their connections. I had seen all the films and thought the books might be more entertaining. So far I've listen to the Girl with the Dragon tattoo, the girl who played with fire and have found them very entertaining. Thank you audible

Lucie Blackman - tall, blond, 21 years old - stepped out into the vastness of Tokyo in the summer of 2000 and disappeared. The following winter, her dismembered remains were found buried in a seaside cave. The seven months in between had seen a massive search for the missing girl involving Japanese policemen, British private detectives, and Lucie’s desperate but bitterly divided parents. Had Lucie been abducted by a religious cult or snatched by human traffickers? Who was the mysterious man she had gone to meet? And what did her work as a hostess in the notorious Roppongi district of Tokyo really involve?

I would listen to Vance read the telephone book.
Revisado: 02-19-15
What made the experience of listening to People Who Eat Darkness the most enjoyable?
I think I've purchased most of the available books Vance has narrated. I would not normally purchase a crime novel but was surfing through the site and saw he was reading this book so I bought it. As anticipated, it was well worth the listen. The story is well written, compelling and provided an unexpected glimpse into Japanese culture that was enlightening. The writer clearly knew his subject matter and presented an objective narrative of the facts, with appropriate insight, while being neither overly sentimental, nor judgmental.
Any additional comments?
I highly recommend this book. The story is a page-turner and Vance reads with his usual style and grace - leaving you hanging on his last word and wishing for more.
