Long, comforting book on moon exploration

Fascinating story ruined by horrible narration
Revisado: 04-22-21
Surprised by the praise for the narration here, it close to ruined it for me. There’s no need for every single phrase and sentence to be read as if with any exaggerated sense of wonder. And I shouldn’t need to cringe every time the narrator says mooooooon.... in a book about the moon with the word used a bazillion times. The story itself is amazing enough, it doesn’t need to be told like this.

Historia
Five figures gather 'round a shallow grave. They had all taken turns to dig. An adult-sized hole would have taken longer. An innocent life had been taken, but the pact had been made. Their secrets would be buried, bound in blood. Years later a headmistress is found brutally strangled, the first in a spate of gruesome murders that shock the Black Country.

Great story ruined by awful narration
Revisado: 12-18-17
A compelling story - just a shame that the narration got in the way. I'd still recommend it (the whodunnit aspect is excellent) but be prepared for a narrator who seems to have no grasp of what she is actually reading.

I did a complete 360 with this book, struggled to get into it & then boom, all of a sudden I was obsessed, hook line & sinker. PS, the narration is awesome, and the narrator deserves a prize for best "arrrrghs!" and "gahhhs!".... cracks me up everytime.

Loved this one, fun that it took him outside his usual US small town wandering etc etc etc... very enjoyable. Great narration as always.

I basically swallowed this 11 hour audiobook in just over 24 hours... could. not. turn. it. off. Cannot believe this is a debut, it is clever and twisty and forever kept me guessing. I still can't figure out the last sentence and whether I'm just being paranoid or not {not really a spoiler}. Honestly I'm just sad this is the author's first because I have nothing to follow it up with. Counting days til the sequel arrives in October.

Historia
In a lifetime shaped by politics, President Franklin D. Roosevelt proved himself a master manipulator of Congress, the press, and the public. But when war in Europe and Asia threatened America's shores, FDR found himself in a world turned upside down, where his friends became his foes, his enemies his allies. To help wage democracy's first "total war", he turned to one of history's most remarkable triumvirates.

Best WW2 non-fiction I've listened to
Revisado: 04-19-16
Combination of great writing and a great performance made this difficult to put down and by the time I'd finished 20 hours I still wanted more. Fascinating insights from a perspective I've read little about, this book certainly brings the characters to life. Will definitely buy more from this author & performer.

Historia
The Berlin blockade brought former allies to the brink of war. Britain, France, the United States and the Soviet Union defeated and began their occupation of Germany in 1945, and within a few years, the Soviets and their Western partners were jockeying for control of their former foe. Attempting to thwart the Allied powers' plans to create a unified West German government, the Soviets blocked rail and road access to the western sectors of Berlin in June 1948.

Well researched & interesting account but the bland & monotonous performance made it very difficult to stay interested. And seriously, "Kway Dorsay"?

Great story but would love a better narrator
Revisado: 01-07-16
I love Kate Morton's stories and I'm so disappointed they're stuck with a poor narrator. The Australian creeping into the poor attempt at an accent is just too irritating (especially as an Aussie!). I wish they'd choose an English narrator so I could fully enjoy the beautiful writing.

“Why is this town called Mother’s Rest?” That’s all Reacher wants to know. But no one will tell him. It’s a tiny place hidden in a thousand square miles of wheat fields, with a railroad stop, and sullen and watchful people, and a worried woman named Michelle Chang, who mistakes him for someone else: her missing partner in a private investigation she thinks must have started small and then turned lethal.

Something definitely missing here - build up way too slow, action way too fast. Boring, which is a word I don't usually associate with this series.

Totally brilliant legal thriller - enthralling
Revisado: 06-05-14
So glad I went by the reviews not the publishers summary (which didn't sound overly exciting) because this is easily the best book I've listened to this year. Firstly it's so nice to have courtroom drama from the UK perspective, having worked as a court typist for a number of year I found it highly authentic, particularly the leering tones from the prosecutor! The narrator did a brilliant job with that. The story itself was engaging, kept me guessing and I couldn't stop listening. Most importantly, I'm sad now I've finished because I just want more. Witty, beautifully paced and clever - this is a must read!
