Historia
Follow the journey of Horace Holly and his ward, Leo Vincey, to a lost kingdom in the African interior. There they encounter a primitive race of natives and a mysterious white queen named Ayesha who reigns as the all-powerful "She", or "She-who-must-be-obeyed". In this work, Rider Haggard developed the conventions of the Lost World subgenre, which many later authors emulated.

Good story, interesting side characters, but slow pace, old language and narration make it hard to enjoy.

Historia
Shipwrecked on a remote island in the Dutch East Indies, Captain Aubrey, surgeon and secret intelligence agent Stephen Maturin, and the crew of the Diane fashion a schooner from the wreck. A vicious attack by Malay pirates is repulsed, but the makeshift vessel burns, and they are truly marooned. Their escape from this predicament is one that only the whimsy and ingenuity of Patrick O Brian or Stephen Maturin could devise.

Aubrey Maturin at its finest
Revisado: 08-19-19
From indies to Australia in this volume. The flow of the series is at its best in the repeating year of 1813. All the characters and places seem so very real.

Hornblower light
Revisado: 04-10-19
Already done all the Hornblowers and O’briens and still need more age of sail goodbess? Try Bolitho series next. But after that you could do worse than Sails On the Horizon. Its a solid story, nothing super impressive but definitely not bad. There’s a (doomed or not?) romance subplot with a quaker woman, and a few well done side characters, that rise this above the weaker sailing adventures.

Historia
In Mississippi Jack, the fifth installment in the Bloody Jack series, the intrepid Jacky Faber, having once again eluded British authorities, heads west, hoping that no one will recognize her in the wilds of America. There she tricks the tall-tale hero Mike Fink out of his flatboat, equips it as a floating casino-showboat, and heads south to New Orleans, battling murderous bandits, British soldiers, and other scoundrels along the way.

A romp through rivers of north america
Revisado: 02-13-19
After the claustrophobic, locked in place #4, this is a much more lighthearted thing, with Jack and Jamie zooming all over the NA map meeting a vast array of characters. And it's not very good really. There's too many new faces, too many places, nobody is developed past a 1-dimensional paper cutout caricature. It's not bad, it's just not up there with the best of the series and in particular, doesn't compare well at all with the previous one.
The narrator Katherine Kellgren though, is better than ever, spectacularly well done.

Need even more napoleonic naval action?
Revisado: 03-06-17
Would you say that listening to this book was time well-spent? Why or why not?
Just like Hornblower, just not quite as good (actually, seems Ramage even was Hornblowers messmate as a midshipman). Comparable in quality to Bolitho books.
Any additional comments?
Worth your time if you've already gone through all Aubrey-Maturin and Hornblower books and are not satisfied yet.

Jacky Faber, Bloody Jack, is back, and this time, she's facing a situation far worse than a ship full of murderous pirates. Curse of the Blue Tattoo, L. A. Meyer's sequel to the enormous popular Bloody Jack, is just as bawdy and entertaining as the original.

Excellent follow up to Bloody Jack
Revisado: 11-21-16
What made the experience of listening to Curse of the Blue Tattoo the most enjoyable?
I was hesitant to pick this up, knowing it's set on girl-school, not man-o-war. Silly me. The story continues well, jack keeps on trying to make do and keeps on getting her feet kicked from under her.
What did you like best about this story?
Really growing to hate a few of the characters. But despite that, everybody was quite believable and well fleshed out.
Any additional comments?
Katherine Kellgren is probably the best narrator I've come across.

Historia
Life as a ship's boy aboard HMS Dolphin is a dream come true for Jacky Faber. Gone are the days of scavenging for food and fighting for survival on the streets of 18th-century London. Instead, Jacky is becoming a skilled and respected sailor as the crew pursues pirates on the high seas. There's only one problem: Jacky is a girl. And she will have to use every bit of her spirit, wit, and courage to keep the crew from discovering her secret.

Superb story with fresh angle
Revisado: 11-21-16
Where does Bloody Jack rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?
Not quite Aubrey Maturin, but maybe on par with Hornblower or Bolitho. The tone is teen-friendly, with a dark undertone and a few a bit grizzly scenes. Like one friend getting murdered and the murderer walking away free.
What did you like best about this story?
Life aboard a frigate, from viewpoint of a girl pretending to be a ships boy, and done well and believably.
Any additional comments?
Katherine Kellgren is probably the best narrator I've come across yet.

Historia
At the opening of a voyage filled with disaster and delight, Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin are in pursuit of a privateer sailing under American colours through the Great South Sea. Stephen's objective is to set the revolutionary tinder of South America ablaze to relieve the pressure on the British government which has blundered into war with the young and uncomfortably vigorous United States. The shock and barbarity of hand-to-hand fighting are sharpened by O'Brian's exact sense of period, his eye for landscape and his feel for a ship under sail.

Historia
Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin are ordered home by dispatch vessel to bring the news of their latest victory to the government. But Maturin is a marked man for the havoc he has wrought in the French intelligence network in the New World, and the attention of two privateers soon becomes menacing. The chase that follows through the fogs and shallows of the Grand Banks is tense, and unexpected in its culmination. Meanwhile in Paris, Diana Villiers anxiously awaits Maturin's safe return.

If you could sum up The Surgeon's Mate in three words, what would they be?
Awesome historical fiction
What about Simon Vance’s performance did you like?
More matter of fact, less caricature than Rick Jerrom
Any additional comments?
Just pointing out there are 2 versions of this book in audible, one by the series normal narrator and then this... which is different but by no means worse.

Brilliant
Revisado: 11-12-12
What did you like best about this story?
The story morphs from a fun childrens story to a tragedy of tormented people and to a critical view of humanity. The beginning is much like the way it was shown in Disneys "Sword in Stone", though with some darker undertones.
What about Neville Jason’s performance did you like?
Usually I'm not fond of the reader "acting" or overacting the parts, but here the performance was just too good to not love. Staying true to the tone of the story, during the tragic parts the telling was well toned down.
